It's 7:45pm on Tuesday, December 4th, the match has kicked off.
Hartlepool ended their recent barren run with a priceless win, but it wasn't as easy as it might have been after they raced into an early two-goal lead. Tranmere made a real fight of it in the second half, even narrowing the gap, only for Hartlepool to score a third five minutes later. Gary Liddle gave the home team the lead on three minutes, lashing a 20-yard shot into the top corner after Rovers failed to clear a right-wing cross from Eddie Nolan, on loan from Blackburn. An on 11 minutes they scored a picture goal to make it 2-0, Richie Humphreys starting it with a great pass from deep in his own half to Ian Moore. He controlled it well before finding James Brown on the right of the area and the youngster jinked past a defender, before cutting inside and slotting a low shot just inside the far post. Hartlepool should have been home and dry, but Tranmere recovered well, and by the time the second half started they were playing well. They narrowed the gap eight minutes after the break, Shane Sherriff curling a brilliant 25-yard free-kick into the top corner. But Tranmere's hopes took another blow five minutes later when a risky back-pass fell short of Danny Coyne, Joel Porter won a 50-50 challenge with the keeper and got to his feet quickly to roll the loose ball into an empty net. That was the end of the scoring, but not the end of the chances. Rovers had a Ben Chorley header cleared off the line by Nolan and home keeper Jan Budtz made a brave double save at the feet of Chris Greenacre and Steve Jennings as Tranmere threatened time and again. But the best late chance fell to the impressive Brown, who spotted Coyne off his line and, from wide on the right, chipped a great shot on to the top of the bar and behind to safety.
