Match Preview

Nerves are jangling and fingernails are frantically being chewed at the JJB Stadium as Wigan Athletic prepare to host Tottenham on Sunday.

The Latics have slipped to 16th place in the table and are only three points clear of the drop zone after picking up just two points from their last four games.

Last weekend, Paul Jewell's out-of-sorts side let a one-goal lead slip to draw 1-1 with Aston Villa in a match which saw injury-plagued midfielder Luis Antonio Valencia pick up a first-half red card to rule him out of the next three matches.

But, despite their recent travails, Wigan have a relatively solid recent home record under their belts which includes two wins and a draw from their last four games.

Jewell also has a virtually fully-fit squad to choose from after an injury-plagued spring-time period with only goalkeeper Chris Kirkland (finger) currently out of action.

However, the Latics have never beaten Spurs in a competitive match - having met only three times in the past - and were on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline at White Hart Lane earlier this season.

Tottenham return to Premiership action looking to consolidate their place among the pack chasing a UEFA Cup place for next season.

Spurs have been given an extra 24 hours to recover from their exertions of playing Sevilla in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup on Thursday evening which was a courtesy not granted to Martin Jol's side last week.

They faced and subsequently lost 1-0 at Chelsea last weekend less than 48 hours after playing the opening leg of their European tie in Spain to suffer a first defeat in five domestic fixtures.

The result saw Jol's side lose pace with the top-six and, with Portsmouth and Reading snapping at their heels, a return to winning ways is vital to their European ambitions for next season.

Match Report

Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane ended his goal drought with a superb second-half header in a thriller at the JJB Stadium which ended in a 3-3 stalemate.

It was the ex-Everton midfielder's first in 28 Wigan appearances and put the Latics in front for the third time.

But they had to be content with a share of the points in their fight for Premiership survival after Robbie Keane made it three apiece.

Wigan had skipper Arjan de Zeeuw back to make his 200th appearance and Henri Camara got his first start since December.

Spurs, anxious to bounce back from their European disappointment, had Pascal Chimbonda returning to the JJB for the first time since his acrimonious departure.

There was a sensational start with both sides grabbing a goal inside the opening four minutes.

Ironically, Chimbonda's first touch saw him penalised for a foul on Emile Heskey and, from Denny Landzaat's free-kick, Heskey headed in his third in as many games.

Spurs came up with an instant reply with Keane threading a terrific ball through for Dimitar Berbatov who poked a right-foot shot beyond John Filan.

Spurs almost had a second when the Bulgarian beat the offside trap to set up a shot for Keane, but Landzaat did well to block it.

The Latics were back in front after 30 minutes thanks to a sensational strike from Leighton Baines.

The England Under-21 left-back latched on to a headed clearance and let fly with an unstoppable volley from the edge of the area which flew past Paul Robinson.

This time the lead last five minutes as Spurs grabbed a controversial equaliser from the penalty spot through Keane .

Jermaine Jenas was pushed by Baines outside the box and went down as Filan raced out to meet him and Keane made no mistake as he wrong-footed the keeper from the spot.

Wigan should have been in front at half-time after Robinson beat out a Paul Scharner header and Kilbane put the follow up over the bar.

The Latics did lead again when Kilbane headed in from Ryan Taylor's corner, but Spurs salvaged a point when Keane lobbed Filan from 25 yards after spotting him off his line.
