Match Report

Roy Keane's Sunderland start life back in the Premier League with a tough test of their mettle at home to much-fancied Tottenham Hotspur.

The Black Cats won the Championship crown last season after a superb run of form under the Irishman and Keane will be hoping a summer of major recruitment will enable his side to stay in the top-flight.

Keane has brought in Aberdeen's Russell Anderson, Colchester's Greg Halford and West Brom's Paul McShane to strengthen his defence and Manchester United's Kieran Richardson and Norwich City's Dickson Etuhu to bolster the midfield.

However, the two major recruits have been Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who has arrived in a record £9million deal from Hearts - but may have to wait for a debut due to a shoulder problem.

New recruit Halford, along with Carlos Edwards, are also injury doubts to face Spurs, while Grant Leadbitter is definitely ruled out by a knee problem.

Spurs have also been busy in the summer transfer market, as head coach Martin Jol plots an assault on a top-four finish.

At the back Wales international Gareth Bale and Auxerre centre-half Younes Kaboul will add some youthful zest, while much is expected of Germany Under-21 international midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who has joined from Hertha Berlin.

However, the major deal for the north London club was the £16.5million capture of England striker Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic.

Bent will add to a potent Spurs strikeforce which already includes Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe, as well as last season's star player, Dimitar Berbatov.

Jol believes his side can challenge the big four, with deadly rivals Arsenal the main target.

He told the club's official website: "We haven't lost a game in pre-season and that is not always a good omen but, having said that, we haven't lost a friendly in the last three summers now."

Two seasons ago this fixture ended 1-1, with Spurs having edged a 3-2 victory at White Hart Lane earlier on in the campaign.
