Match Report

Tottenham Hotspur will hope to continue their climb away from the relegation zone when they travel to fifth-placed Portsmouth on Saturday.

Despite winning four of the last five meetings between the two sides, Spurs will travel to the south coast with trepidation.

Pompey have not lost in the league since September 2 when they went down 3-1 at league leaders Arsenal. Their 3-1 win over Aston Villa last weekend was their seventh success since that defeat.

They, unlike Spurs, have combined consistent scoring with a strong defence, conceding just two goals in their last five league games.

However, speculation has increased this week over the effect that the African Cup of Nations will have on Pompey's rise.

Sulley Muntari, Nwankwo Kanu, John Utaka and Papa Bouba Diop are all expected to be absent for around a month, although Djimi Traore has not been included in Mali's preliminary squad and should therefore be available to Harry Redknapp.

Muntari has spoken of his frustration over the timing of the tournament, calling for a review of the fixtures and hailing the possibility of a move to the English summertime.

"I am just praying that in future they change the timetable and move it to the summer so that we can play for our clubs all the time," he said after scoring twice at Villa Park last weekend.

Redknapp is expected to make the most of his African stars while he can, including leading scorer Benjani Mwaruwari, who confirmed his commitment to the club this week.

Midfielder Sean Davis is returning to fitness following a hamstring problem but is unlikely to be back to face Spurs.

Unless Davis returns to action ahead of schedule, Redknapp is expected to stick with the squad that beat Villa so convincingly last weekend.

Tottenham are certain to be without striker Robbie Keane as the Irishman sits out the second match of the three-game ban he received following his controversial red card against Birmingham City.

Anthony Gardner could return in defence after recovering from a sprained ankle, although he may be asked to prove his fitness and delay any return for a week.

Ricardo Rocha played his first competitive game for two months when he turned out for the reserves, and will hope to force his way into the damaged Spurs defence.

His cause will have been helped by the news that left-back Gareth Bale will be out for at least three months after injuring his foot two weeks ago, although Lee Young-Pyo should start in that position this weekend.
