Tottenham Hotspur were trounced by a Liverpool side who proved their Championship mettle as Rafa Benitez's boys finally showed some team chemistry. Sami Hyypia set the tone early on with a crunching tackle on Jermain Defoe which left the striker grounded for several minutes. Liverpool had the real first chance of the game as Craig Bellamy collected the ball in space at the edge of the area but his lob shot curled wide. The only bright spark for Spurs was Danny Murphy, who was clearly enjoying being back at Anfield. He linked up well with Jermaine Jenas, creating an opening, and Murphy showed a touch of class with a through ball for Robbie Keane past three red shirts, but Keane couldn't quite reach it. And it was Murphy again minutes later as he floated in a deft ball from a spot-kick for Ledley King. But he mis-timed his header for what should have been the opening goal. Spurs always looked dangerous on the counter-attack but Liverpool continued to keep them captive in their own half. There were cries of handball ringing around Anfield after King raised his elbow to deflect a shot from Xabi Alonso. But despite the supporters' pleas referee Howard Webb remained unmoved. The visitors didn't look ready to play after the break and Liverpool took full advantage, piling on the pressure but not getting a lucky bounce. Edgar Davids came on for Teemu Tainio and provided another spur for the visitors. A counter-attack saw Davids beat all the red shirts downfield and after drawing in Jose Reina place a perfect ball at Jenas' feet. But the young England man, who had been having a nightmare game, looked unsure and missed a sitter. All his team-mates' hearts sank with the miss as it was the best chance they saw all afternoon. The Reds then caught them off-guard with a goal on 62 minutes. Captain Steven Gerrard danced around King and provided Craig Bellamy with an open goal. But his attempted tap-in rebounded off the post to Mark Gonzalez and he left no doubt by firing it home to claim his first league goal. Only minutes later, the Kop were celebrating again after Alonso stripped the ball from Murphy's feet and ran towards goal. He threaded a great ball through to Dirk Kuyt and the Dutchman calmly slotted it away to give Liverpool a comfortable lead. Murphy received warm applause when he was taken off for Mido and just as the Anfield faithful began to filter out, John Arne Riise gave them a reason to stay with a wonder strike on 89 minutes. Luis Garcia won the ball at the halfway line and quickly moved it to Riise who only took three strides before unleashing a thunderous strike from 45 yards which left Paul Robinson floundering.
