Match Preview

The Premier League's two newest managers will be fighting for a much-needed win on Sunday.

Spurs drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough last weekend in their first league game under Juande Ramos, while Frank Barlow was only promoted to caretaker manager of Wigan after Chris Hutchings was sacked on Monday.

Wigan appear to need the points more than Spurs, having lost their last six games and failed to win since August 18.

The Latics are at least having a relatively quiet period off the pitch despite the sacking of Hutchings, with Emile Heskey almost ready for a return and an otherwise empty injury room.

Spurs on the other hand have had to contend with constant debate over the future of striker Dimitar Berbatov while facing legal action from Sevilla over their luring of Ramos to London.

Jose Maria del Nido, president of the Spanish side, suggested this week that the possibility of taking action against Spurs is there.

"The fact that Juande is part of the past doesn't mean that Sevilla will not exercise action in the relevant courts to defend its interests, with all the necessary strength that the club has," del Nido warned.

Tottenham's sporting director Damien Comolli reassured Spurs fans that Berbatov, signed for £10.9million in the summer of 2006, is committed to the team.

Then the Bulgaria international affirmed his commitment to the Spurs' cause by saying he 'loved' the club.

"I met with Dimitar's agent and he assured me Dimitar is not looking for a move in January and simply wants to concentrate on helping the team push up the table," Comolli explained.

Ramos began the game against Boro with Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe in attack, relegating Berbatov and Robbie Keane to the bench, where they will probably remain against Wigan.

The five Spurs players out injured, which could become four by Sunday as Gareth Bale looks to return, are all defenders, perhaps explaining why the team hasn't kept a clean sheet since September.

Match Report

Tottenham Hotspur and Wigan began Sunday equal on eight points at the lower end of the Premier League, but after Spurs' consummate 4-0 victory, the teams couldn't have looked further apart.

The north London club were always in the ascendancy under the guidance of their new manager Juande Ramos.

It was only Spurs' second win of the campaign, but under the Spaniard it seems there will be many more on the way.

In Ramos' first home game in the league, Jermaine Jenas netted a first-half brace, while Aaron Lennon made sure of the result in the 39th minute with a sweet, dipping volley.

Darren Bent crowned his 200th league game with a well-taken strike in the second half after coming off the bench.

There could have been many more too, but scoring has not been Spurs' problem this term - it is their defensive brittleness that has lost them points.

Until now, that is. England number one Paul Robinson, barracked by fans earlier in the season after a number of questionable performances, has conceded only one goal in his last four games.

Considering his team have only managed to keep their sheet clean in two of the previous 15 games, this current run will boost Robinson's confidence - which is good news for both club and country.

For Wigan, however, things can only get better.

Having parted company with manager Chris Hutchings after last weekend's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, they looked rudderless and posed Robinson no problems whatsoever.

The north west club now continue their dismal run - the worst in the Premier League - of seven straight losses, having leaked 18 goals in that time.

Caretaker-manager Frank Barlow looked disinterested and rose from his dug out only once in the match - in the 29th minute - after his team where two goals down.

Starting with Marcus Bent as solitary forward, Wigan looked disorganised.

The only positives for Latics fans at present are Emile Heskey's imminent return - he is pencilled in for the trip to Arsenal at the end of the month - and news that Paul Jewell is to meet club directors to discuss a possible return on Monday

Spurs go into the international break with a spring in their step - Ramos' four games in charge have brought three wins and a draw.

They will go to Upton Park to take on local rivals West Ham United on November 25 hoping to jump even further up the Premier League.
