Match Report

Both Tottenham and Liverpool could field under-strength teams for what is a largely meaningless last game of the season at White Hart Lane.

Spurs' only incentive is that they can leapfrog West Ham United and seal a top-half finish if they beat the Reds and Alan Curbishley's side fail to clinch victory against Aston Villa.

In truth, Spurs' season was over after they lost to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Cup almost two months ago and many of their displays since that defeat have been mediocre.

Before last Saturday's 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Reading, they had played in four successive 1-1 draws and earlier suffered defeats to both Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Juande Ramos has promised that Spurs will challenge for a top-four place next season so Sunday's match could well be a barometer for their chances against the likes of Liverpool in the 2008-09 campaign.

Long-term injury victims Ledley King and Gareth Bale once again miss out, but Ramos may opt to use some of his fringe first-team players against Rafa Benitez's side.

Liverpool's campaign may have lasted longer than Spurs', but last Sunday's 1-0 win against Manchester City was a mundane end-of-season affair following the Reds' dramatic Champions League exit to Chelsea four days earlier.

Benitez's side are guaranteed to finish fourth but, after finishing 21 points behind 2006-07 champions Manchester United last season, they go into this term's final game only 11 points adrift of the top two.

Harry Kewell, who has been told he will not be offered a new Anfield contract in the summer and is free to leave the club, Fabio Aurelio and Daniel Agger all remain in the treatment room and miss Sunday's trip to north London.

Last season at White Hart Lane, Liverpool returned to the north-west with all three points after Luis Garcia's goal on the stroke of half-time proved to be the only difference between the two teams.
