Match Report

Dimitar Berbatov netted an impressive brace as Tottenham moved a step closer to securing a place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup.

The Bulgarian international was a class above the Club Brugge defence and is starting to repay the £10.9million which the north London side forked out for his signature during the summer.

Tottenham have now picked up maximum points from their opening two games in the group stages and already look odds on certainties to qualify for the next phase of the tournament.

Ivory Coast international Didier Zokora returned to the Tottenham side after missing the last four matches with Malaria.

England winger Aaron Lennon was switched out to the left-hand side of midfield as Hossam Ghaly earned a recall to the side.

But it was Club Brugge who almost shocked the home crowd after just four minutes.

Gaetan Englebert's close-range shot deflected off Michael Dawson, but Paul Robinson produced a fantastic reflex save to deny the Brugge midfielder.

But the Belgian side got their noses in front on 14 minutes when Ibrahim Salou opened the scoring in spectacular fashion.

Englebert picked out Salou on the edge of the box and with his back to goal, he turned and fired an unstoppable shot past the stranded Robinson into the top right-hand corner.

But their lead was short-lived as Tottenham grabbed an equaliser on 17 minutes.

Jermaine Jenas' free-kick was flicked on by Pascal Chimbonda into the path of Berbatov.

The Bulgarian showed his pedigree when he struck a right-foot shot on the volley and the ball sailed into the bottom right-hand corner.

Berbatov is clearly saving his best football for European competition after earning a man of the match display against Besiktas in the first group game.

The goal seemed to ignite the home side and Ghaly should have doubled their lead on 29 minutes.

Lennon cut the ball back to Berbatov who in turn released the Egyptian midfielder, but with the goal at his mercy he somehow managed to strike the ball over the crossbar.

And Jenas came close to adding a second on 36 minutes when he was picked out in the box by Berbatov, but drilled his shot inches past the post.

Robbie Keane finally got back among the goals when he made it two for the home side on 63 minutes.

Berbatov was once again involved in the heart of the action when he played a superb through-ball into the path of his strike partner and Keane made no mistake striking a sweet shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

Berbatov then sealed victory for Tottenham on 73 minutes when he scored his second of the game.

Ghaly's cross from the right picked out the striker who found himself unmarked in the box and he powered home a close-range header into the bottom corner of the net.
