Chelsea and Tottenham meet in the Carling Cup Final at Wembley this afternoon with the season’s first piece of silverware up for grabs

Match Report

Holders Chelsea must overcome an in-form Tottenham Hotspur outfit on Sunday if they are to retain the Carling Cup.

The 2008 final will be the first to be played at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium, with the last seven champions being crowned in Cardiff, at the Millennium Stadium.

Trips to Wales had become a regular outing for Chelsea, with victories in the Carling Cup in 2007 and 2005 alongside an FA Cup Final loss to Arsenal in 2002.

A 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in 2002 was Tottenham's solitary visit to Cardiff, but the north London side have, historically, been one of the most successful sides at Wembley.

Their League Cup victory there in 1999, a year before it closed, was their fifth trip to the home of English football and the third time they've come away with a trophy.

Recent battles between these two sides have been rather one-sided though, with Chelsea winning 21 of the last 28 ties, including three wins and a draw from the past four games.

This week, Chelsea battled with Olympiacos for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, while Tottenham continued their quest for a UEFA Cup trophy that could be their only ticket back into European football next season.

With this as the background, Spurs could well have the most to play for this weekend, especially after a tumultuous first few months of the season which saw manager Martin Jol sacked and the team flirt with the relegation places.

New boss Juande Ramos has since turned the club around, winning 14 and drawing seven of his 26 games since joining from Sevilla.

However, he could be without Michael Dawson, whose hamstring injury kept him from facing Slavia Prague on Thursday, although fellow centre-back and team captain Ledley King has been rested specifically to prepare him for the showpiece.

January singing Alan Hutton should return to the side at right-back after being ineligible for the UEFA Cup, while Gareth Bale and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are the two long-term injury problems.

Chelsea rested Frank Lampard and John Terry for the 0-0 draw with Olympiacos, leaving the England internationals raring to go on Sunday.

"John and I are going to be fresh and a final against Tottenham is always a game that you are going to be very excited about," Lampard said this week.

With no injured players, Chelsea manager Avram Grant must simply choose from his exceptional squad of players, with competition particularly strong in defence and midfield.

Grant must choose either Ricardo Carvalho or Alex to partner Terry at the back, while Shaun Wright-Phillips, Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda will fight for a place in midfield.

His final decision will be whether to continue with one striker in attack or to pair both Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka together up front.
