Match Preview

Tottenham Hotspur welcome newly Premier League debutants Burnley to White Hart Lane on Saturday as they try and erase two recent defeats from their memories.

After winning their first four games of the season, Spurs have since lost against Manchester United and London rivals Chelsea to lose touch with the pace-setters and this clash against Owen Coyle's men gives them the perfect opportunity to arrest their recent blip.

Harry Redknapp is likely to opt for Robbie Keane and sharp-shooting Jermain Defoe in attack ahead of Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko, who will settle for a place on the bench.

Redknapp was counting the cost of last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge as influential defender Ledley King limped out of the action with a hamstring injury to add to his woeful injury record.

He will remain on the sidelines alongside Sebastien Bassong, who suffered a head injury in the same game, Luka Modric (broken leg) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin).

However, Michael Dawson's return to fitness has proved a timely boost for Redknapp's men.

Burnley are enjoying life in the top league and have picked up nine points from a possible 18.

The problem for the Clarets is that all their wins have came at their Turf Moor home and are yet to pick up a point from their three away fixtures - a record that needs to be reversed.

Martin Paterson and Steven Fletcher will be looking to partner new signing David Nugent, who is likely to start following his debut two goal salvo in the 3-1 victory agaisnt Sunderland last week.

With wily winger Robbie Blake still causing defences problems, he will once again look to unlock the opposing defence in front of him.

Coyle has to select his side without the influential pair of Chris McCann (knee) and Steven Caldwell (groin).

Despite the Lancashire outfits lack of top-flight football, the two teams played out a memorable Carling Cup semi-final last term.

At White Hart Lane in the first-leg, the hosts were rocked after Martin Paterson had put Burnley into an early lead but a second half revival saw Spurs walk away with a 4-1 victory.

Michael Dawson, Jamie O'Hara, Roman Pavlyuchenko and a Michael Duff own goal had given the Premier League side a healthy margin ahead of the return leg.

However, Tottenham had clearly underestimated their Turf Moor test and Burnley forced the tie into extra-time after finishing 3-0 in front after 90 minutes.

Match Report

Robbie Keane netted four goals as Tottenham returned to winning ways in style in the Premier League and left Burnley still searching for their first points away from home in the top-flight.

After losing their last two league games against Manchester United and Chelsea, Harry Redknapp was looking for a much-improved performance from the north London club and Keane stole the show with a superb display.

The Tottenham skipper must have feared for his place when Peter Crouch arrived at the club during the summer, but he has managed to regain his best form at just the right time and netted his first hat-trick in the league since December 2003.

The home side opened the scoring on 17 minutes. Jermain Defoe broke clear of Andre Bikey and was brought down inside the box. Referee Mike Dean had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

Keane made no mistake striking the spot-kick into the corner of the net.

Burnley thought they had grabbed an equaliser on 25 minutes when Steven Fletcher raced clear of the Tottenham defence and fired the ball past Carlo Cudicini, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Jermaine Jenas has missed the start of the season through injury, but he wasted no time making an immediate impact on his return to the side when he scored the second on 32 minutes.

Niko Kranjcar saw his shot blocked by the Burnley defence. The rebound fell kindly to Jenas, who saw his fierce drive take a wicked deflection of Stephen Jordan and gave Jensen no chance as the ball flew into the bottom corner.

Burnley blew a golden chance to get themselves back into the game on 69 minutes.

Cudicini failed to hold onto a free-kick by Tyrone Mears and Robbie Blake reacted the quickest to the loose ball, but struck his effort against the post.

Burnley were made to pay when Keane added his second of the game on 73 minutes.

Aaron Lennon raced away down the right before cutting the ball back for the Tottenham skipper and he fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Keane grabbed his hat-trick on 77 minutes when he connected with a high ball over the top of the Burnley and beat the offside trap to fire a left-foot shot past Jensen

The Spurs striker made it a day to remember when he grabbed his fourth of the game on 87 minutes when he struck the ball through the legs of Jensen.
