Match Report

Bolton host Tottenham in a league fixture Spurs have yet to win this century - although this will be the first in which Wanderers start the match bottom of the Premier League.

Wanderers have won their last five games at home to Spurs, conceding only one goal in the process, but are currently one point adrift of Tottenham, and safety.

Even more worrying for the Trotters is the demise of their once-enviable defence as, having kept only one clean sheet all season, the loss of Tal Ben Haim and boss Sam Allardyce appear all the more important.

That problem won't be helped by the injury to full-back Jlloyd Samuel, who will be out for six weeks after he tore his hamstring during the 1-0 defeat to Birmingham last weekend.

Ricardo Gardner replaced Samuel against Birmingham and for the UEFA Cup tie with FK Rabotnicki so he should keep his place for the foreseeable future.

At the other end of the pitch, Heidar Helguson's ankle injury will keep him out for around two months, giving striker Kevin Davies a chance to get back in contention.

Manager Martin Jol continues to dominate the headlines at Tottenham, with each defeat leading to fresh calls for his head.

"Martin's our manager and there are no plans to meet anyone else," was the immediate response from Spurs' hierarchy following the 3-1 home defeat to rivals Arsenal last weekend.

Jol has also stoked up controversy over his decision to omit Jermain Defoe from last week's loss, a decision which, he said, was to encourage the England striker to work harder to force his way into the side.

"What I said to Jermain was that they have to push each other and when he gets his chance he has to take it. It is very healthy for the squad," Jol explained.

The three strikers currently favoured - Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent - have scored only two goals between them so far this term and could still see their places under threat if the drought continues.

Spurs' last victory was over a month ago against relegation favourites Derby County.
