Match Preview

Ellis returns for Gulls Torquay boss Paul Buckle will have Mark Ellis available when his side face Stevenage at Plainmoor. The centre-back returns after completing the one-match ban he received for his sending off at Accrington last weekend by sitting out the 1-1 draw with Rotherham on Tuesday. Ellis will more than likely return to the starting line-up which would mean Chris Robertson moving back to full-back and captain Lee Minshull returning to his favoured midfield position. Attacking midfielder Ryan Gilligan will be unavailable, though, as he has cut short his loan spell with the Gulls and returned to parent club Northampton due to a family bereavement and the fact that manager Ian Sampson has been sacked by the Cobblers. Buckle has no injury or suspension worries as United look to try and gain momentum for a play-off charge. Stevenage boss Graham Westley could recall Darren Murphy to his squad. The midfielder has only made one appearance for Boro this season after dislocating his shoulder against Portsmouth in the Carling Cup in August. He then broke his leg on his comeback for the reserves in September. However, he has now fought his way back to fitness, and after playing 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek is available for selection but if picked is likely to start on the bench. Striker Craig Reid also impressed for the reserves alongside Murphy, netting four goals, and that form could earn him a starting place alongside Byron Harrison who scored twice in Saturday's 4-0 win over Cheltenham on his return to the first XI. Westley is unlikely to make many changes, though, after an impressive performance against the Robins which left his side just three points off a League Two play-off spot.

Match Report

Gulls on the climb Torquay pushed nearer the play-off zone with a convincing 2-0 win over 10-man Stevenage - despite missing a second-half penalty. Danny Stevens rocketed in a 46th-minute goal after debutant Ben Pringle - on loan from Derby County - smashed a 20-yarder off the face of the crossbar. Stevens then engineered an 84th-minute goal for Jake Robinson, whose initial shot was saved by Chris Day. The ball flew back out to Robinson, who crashed the ball home past Day. United could have been three to the good by that time but Chris Zebroski's penalty came back off the crossbar after he had been fouled on his way to goal by Stevenage skipper Mark Roberts. Roberts saw red for bringing down Zebroski, after he pounced on a back pass to round keeper Day. United's on-loan Shrewsbury forward Robinson signalled his early intent by testing Stevenage number one Day from 30 yards in the first minute. Day was tested again later in the half by another scorcher from Robinson as United went in search of the opener.
