Match Report
Steve Thompson celebrated being confirmed as Yeovil Town manager as his side won 1-0 at home to Swansea City.
Thompson, who has been on the Town scene for seven years as a player, caretaker/manager and latterly number two to Gary Johnson, celebrated his midweek appointment to the hot seat with a magnificent victory.
Thompson has replaced Johnson, now with Bristol City, and soon showed that he is his own man by making subtle changes which improved the overall performance.
One was to bring Paul Terry back into the starting line-up in midfield and he had an excellent first half before an ankle injury put him out of the game at the interval.
Thompson also played Matt Harrold and Pablo Bastianini up front together for the first time and it was a move that obviously added impetus.
Pulsating though the game was, it produced very few shots on target. In fact, Swansea's first of real note did not come until the 69th minute when substitute Marc Goodfellow brought a diving save from goalkeeper Chris Weale from outside the box.
The goal that won the game came on 39 minutes. Lee Johnson - son of the departed manager and a player the Swans tried to buy for six figures before the transfer window closed - floated over a left-wing corner and central defender Terry Skiverton got down low amid a crowd of players to head home.
Yeovil's earlier efforts had come from the lively Phil Jevons, but they failed to test Willy Gueret, but the keeper did have to be at his best two minutes into the second half when Johnson took a free-kick just outside the box.
He has built up a reputation for scoring from this distance and once again stung the hands of the keeper with a fierce drive.
