Match Report

Lee Trundle fired Swansea back to the top of League One with an inspirational display at previous leaders Southend.

Goals either side of half-time saw Trundle net his 15th goal in as many games and Bayo Akinfenwa secure the points for the Welsh side.

But they made hard work of it in the closing minutes, as Sounthend piled on the pressure after pulling a goal back nine minutes from time through Freddy Eastwood.

Swansea made three changes from the defeat at Stockport in the FA Cup last week with Akinfenwa, Garry Monk and Kristian O'Leary coming in for Kevin Austin, Paul Connor and Roberto Martinez.

Southend remained unchanged following the victory at Barnet and came out the brighter of the two in a lively opening. But it was Swansea who created most of the chances.

The first came on 10 minutes when Akinfenwa sent a long ball through to Trundle who saw his shot blocked. The loose ball fell for Kevin McLeod, who curled a low strike into Southend keeper Bart Griemink's arms.

Five minutes later Trundle turned on the edge of the box but put his half-volley wide.

By this time Southend were trying to get a grip of the game, but Trundle continued to cause problems, supplying chances for Akinfenwa and Leon Britton.

On 40 minutes Swansea finally got the breakthrough they deserved. Akinfenwa flicked on an Alan Tate free-kick and Trundle broke through to fire home at the near post.

Swansea started the second half as they ended the first.

Trundle created a chance for himself with some trickery inside the box but his shot was blocked by Adam Barrett. The ball fell loose to the unmarked Akinfenwa, who tapped home.

That spurred Southend on and ten minutes later Eastwood headed just over after Swansea failed to clear a corner.

The visitors could have made it three on the hour when Britton broke through only for Akinfenwa to fail to control the ball.

Southend went straight down the other end and got their first proper shot on goal through Kevin Maher.

Three minutes later Eastwood laid the ball off to Maher who crossed for Mitchell Cole, but he saw his effort land in keeper Willy Gueret's arms.

Almost immediately, Jamal Campbell-Ryce crossed from the right only for Eastwood to put a free header wide from less than two yards out.

Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson took off Shaun Goater and Luke Guttridge for Mark Bentley and Wayne Gray.

And on 81 minutes Gray saw his close-range header fumbled by Gueret and Eastwood took advantage to fire home.

That gave Southend renewed hope but substitute James Lawson fired their only real chance of an equaliser over the crossbar.
