Match Report

An 85th minute goal from Paul Hefferman ended Swansea's brave resistance and gave Doncaster Rovers a 2-1 home win they barely deserved.

The League One leaders had played most of the game with 10 men after having defender Kevin Austin sent off in the 12th minute.

But they still managed to retain possession in impressive style at times and battled back after going a goal down.

Swansea played the better football throughout as Doncaster relied on the long ball to try and utilise the pace of speedy striker Lewis Guy.

But the Welsh club's efforts went unrewarded when Hefferman popped up to snatch his 11th goal of the season five minutes from time.

It was Swansea's first defeat in eight League One games, but if they continue to play like this, they will surely be in the promotion shake-up at the end of the season.

The Swans began in confident style with Lee Trundle and Paul Connor causing problems in attack as Doncaster started hesitantly.

But the home side gradually weathered the storm and Guy carved out the first chance for Richard Offiong who fired straight at the keeper in the eighth minute.

Willie Gueret did well to save from Hefferman three minutes later, before Austin received his marching orders in the 12th minute after bringing down Guy as he raced clean through towards goal.

Worse was to follow for the Welshmen when Michael McIndoe fired Doncaster in front from the penalty spot in the 16th minute after Gary Monk had brought down Guy.

But the Swans battled back bravely and were rewarded when Sam Ricketts capitalised on some poor defending in the 24th minute to beat home keeper Jan Budtz at the near post.

Rovers raised their game in the second half with Guy and Offiong going close but it looked as if Swansea would hold out for a deserved point until Hefferman struck five minutes before the end.

The Rovers striker slammed the ball home from a difficult angle after his first shot had rebounded from a defender on the line.

Swansea still had a chance to snatch a point in the last minute but Budtz did well to tip away a good effort from substitute Adrian Forbes.
