Match Preview
Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland should be able to retain his place in Steve Bruce's first-team plans after being able to rest his troublesome back injury for the last two weeks.
The 27-year-old has been blighted by back problems throughout his career and missed the home defeat against Chelsea with the injury before starting the 5-0 victory at Hull City - the Latics' first win of the campaign.
However, Kirkland believes the two-week international break has helped him, saying: "I've obviously got a problem with it and it's flared up, but it'd be nice to have it sorted so I don't have to talk about it. It feels fine now.
"Rest should hopefully have done the trick."
Kevin Kilbane could feature against his former club despite fracturing his cheekbone in the KC Stadium rout. He was able to play for the Republic of Ireland in their World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Montenegro with a protective mask.
However, Ryan Taylor (knee), Paul Scharner (ankle) and Erik Edman (cruciate knee ligaments) all remain on the sidelines.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane now has a wealth of options at his disposal following a busy summer of transfer activity at the Stadium of Light, but many of last season's failings were again evident when the Black Cats crashed to a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City last time out.
After signing George McCartney from West Ham United on transfer deadline day, Keane was unimpressed when the Northern Ireland international picked up a hamstring injury in his country's World Cup qualifier against Slovakia which has made the left-back doubtful for Saturday's match.
Kenwyne Jones is also currently sidelined after picking up a knee injury while on international duty for Trinidad & Tobago earlier in the year.
Captain Dean Whitehead has been ruled out of Saturday's game with a hip injury but Anton Ferdinand is in line to make his debut following his arrival from West Ham United.
Teemu Tainio and Dwight Yorke will feature against the Latics after recovering from hamstring strains.

Match Report
After banging in five in their last game at Hull City, Wigan Athletic found goals in shorter supply as two ex-Manchester United captains - Steve Bruce and Roy Keane - faced each other at the JJB Stadium.
Luckless defender Titus Bramble's 15th minute own goal was the difference between the sides until Amr Zaki struck to claim his fifth goal of the season.
Earlier Zaki had hit the post and Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon pulled off a brilliant save to deny Maynor Figueroa and it looked like being a frustrating afternoon for the Latics, who finished the game minus midfielder Lee Cattermole who was sent off after collecting two bookings.
Bruce stuck with an unchanged starting line-up after the 5-0 win at Hull last time out, while Keane gave debuts to ex-West Ham men Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney.
A frantic opening saw few chances created until Sunderland snatched the lead after 15 minutes when Bramble headed Steed Malbranque's well-delivered cross past Chris Kirkland.
Just before that, the visitors had threatened when Kieran Richardson was allowed to race into the area and his shot was kept out at the near post by the Wigan keeper.
Emmerson Boyce went close as Wigan hunted the equaliser but he sliced just wide of the target and another chance went begging when Kevin Kilbane failed to connect after being presented with a clear sight of goal.
Sunderland survived again when Kilbane drilled in a corner but Zaki and Bramble both failed to get a head to it.
Wigan were almost caught on the break when Djibril Cisse raced into the area but his shot went just wide.
But Latics luck was out again when Figueroa fired in a terrific ball to the six-yard area but Emile Heskey was unable to get the touch.
Kirkland denied Sunderland a second after 60 minutes when Cisse got the better of Bramble but the keeper did well to block the shot with his legs.
New boy McCartney came up with a vital block to deny Antonio Valencia and Gordon reacted superbly to keep out a screamer from Figueroa.
But the pressure finally told when Figueroa's cross found Zaki just outside the six-yard area and he beat Gordon with a crisp left-foot finish.
