McCartney plays a long ball into Jones. Bassong rises to head the ball away but it falls for Reid on the edge of the box, he cushions it down and drives it goalbound but it flashes just a fraction wide of the post.

A through ball from Andy Reid is played into the path of Jones but Harper scampers out of his area to smash the ball into touch.

Again Lovenkrands picks up possession inside the box and he turns his defender and tries to bend the ball into the far corner but with Fulop beaten it went just over.

Lovenkrands finds space on the left and hangs a high cross towards Ameobi who cushions the ball down to Nolan but he can't shape his body to get a shot off.

The fourth offical shows that there will be five minutes of stoppage time largely down to the delay caused by the injuries to Jones and Coloccini.

Butt plays a poor pass to Coloccini in a dangerous area and Chopra capitalises and is left one-on-one with Harper but tries to pick out Jones and overhits the pass. A golden chance goes begging for Sunderland there.

Gutierrez plays the ball into the feet of Nolan and he touches it down for Duff inside the box but his shot is well off the mark with his weaker foot.

Jones races past Coloccini and pulls it back from the byline towards Chopra but Bassong gets a foot to it. Chopra lays the ball back to Reid who twists and turns before striking with the outside of his boot but he strikes it over.

Duff spins McCartney and lifts the ball in to the back post and Fulop comes but misses it. Ameobi is coming in to meet it but Fulop manages to somehow gather on the turn before it fell to the frontman.

Corner won by Gutierrez taken by Duff towards Taylor unmarked at the back post. His header was beaten away by Fulop and Sunderland manage to scramble it clear after Ameobi's prod goalbound was blocked.

Jose Enrique makes an excellent run down the left hand side and is able to get into the box. He tries to lift the ball towards Carroll but Ferdinand gets his head to it and Fulop collects.

Again Jones is played in by a long ball and Coloccini and Bassong allow him to turn and shoot but Bassong makes a last ditch block. The ball breaks for Reid but Harper makes a superb save.

Kenwyne Jones brings the ball down from a long clearance and holds off the challenge of Bassong to turn towards goal. Jones shoots from the edge of the box with his left-foot but sends it well over the top.

Ameobi out muscles McCartney and breaks into the box but he pulls it a touch behind Nolan who has to play it to Taylor. Taylor surges into the area and goes down under the challenge from Malbranque. Penalty!

The tempo of the game just slowing down now as Sunderland start to focus on protecting their one goal lead.

A long clearance from Harper bounces through towards Ameobi and forces Collins to concede a corner - Duff to deliver but its too high for Taylor and Sunderland clear their lines.

A ferocious challenge from Bassong to dispossess Kenwyne Jones has left the striker in need of treatment. A superb tackle but Jones has certainly taken a blow to his knee. Worrying moments for Ricky Sbragia as Jones receives treatment.

Duff turns inside onto his left foot on the right wing and angles the cross towards Carroll but Fulop palms it away from the striker and Gutierrez attempt to return the ball is headed away.

Controversy at St James Park as Damien Duff races into the Sunderland box after a through ball from Enrique and Duff skips past Ferdinand and goes down but Howard Webb says no penalty.

Carroll misplaces his pass and Jones takes possession for Sunderland and looks to play Cisse in through the channel but Bassong reads the danger and wins the ball back for Newcastle.

Gutierrez picks the ball up on the left and cuts inside before whipping in a low cross that Fulop makes a mess of and McCartney has to head it behind from under his own crossbar.

Sunderland break away quickly with CIsse who races into the Newcastle box but with options limited he tries to angle the ball into the corner but he rolls it wide.

Newcastle haven't won a game this season after conceding the first goal. A statistic I'm sure Joe Kinnear will be aware of. Duff delivers a free-kick from deep and after some head tennis it falls for Ameobi but his shot is blocked.

Sunderland force a corner on the left just before half time that Edwards will deliver. He picks out Collins at the back post who heads it back into the middle and Richardson picks it up and shoots but slips and lifts the ball into the arms of Harper.

Nicky Butt spreads the play wide to Gutierrez who controls and slides the ball to Carroll on the edge of the box. Carroll shifts the ball onto his left foot and tries his luck but fires it just wide.

Gutierrez shows some fancy footwork beating Bardsley on the left hand side and taking the ball to the byline. His centre is blocked but falls for Butt on the half volley but his effort is blocked well by Whitehead and Sunderland clear.

A long ball from McCartney forces Taylor to stretch for the header. Poor communication between Taylor and Coloccini and the ball breaks through for Cisse but Harper is out smartly to mop up the danger.

Marton Fulop is called into action as he comes to catch a deep cross from Taylor. The keeper fumbles it but it falls harmlessly to Whitehead who lets his keeper gather the ball. Nervous moments for the Sunderland keeper.

Sunderland break at pace again through Richardson who makes a lot of ground before sliding the ball to Edwards on the wing. Edwards whips his cross towards the head of Cisse but Bassong again does well to make a solid defensive header.

Richardson lifts the ball into Jones who rises well to flick the ball on. Cisse latches onto the ball but his cross deflects off Coloccini and forces an excellent save from Harper to turn the ball over the bar.

Duff plays the ball into the path of Taylor who has made a brilliant overlapping run. Taylor looks up and pulls the ball back to Ameobi who is free inside the box but Ameobi sends the shot high into the stands.

Cisse holds off a challenge from Coloccini and plays the ball square to Richardson on the half way line. Cisse continues his run in behind the defence and Richardson plays him in but Bassong makes a sliding interception.

Jose Enrique picks up the ball just inside the Sunderland half and plays a deep, early cross towards the head of Carroll who loops the header towards the corner but it bounces back off the crossbar.

Gutierrez concedes a free-kick to the right of his penalty area. Richardson whips the ball in towards the far post and it beats Harper but comes back off the post. It falls for Jones who shoots but Nolan clears off the line.

Kieran Richardson is penalised for a challenge from behind on Enrique. Butt delivers the free-kick from the half way line and finds Carroll who heads down to Ameobi with his back to goal. Ameobi tries a shot on the turn but its comfortable for Fulop.

Duff finds a yard of space to turn and cross on the right hand side and he finds the feet of Ameobi. The striker turns onto his left-foot and shoots but Anton Ferdinand is on top of him and blocks the effort.

A throw in from Bardsley is cushioned down by Cisse into the path of Jones. Jones takes a touch and tries a volley from long range but Coloccini makes the block.

Cisse is fed with his back to goal thirty yards out. Bassong allows him to turn and Cisse tries his luck with his left-foot from range but skews it well wide of Steve Harper's goal.

Again Howard Webb called into action as Steve Harper goes down under a challenge from Anton Ferdinand for a high ball. Some of the Newcastle players take exception to the challenge but Howard Webb calms the situation quickly.

Kenwyne Jones brings the ball down and bundles past Coloccini and the ball almost broke for Malbranque but Bassong read the danger well to make a vital clearance.

The first crunching tackle of this game comes after just one minute as Andy Carroll goes in hard on Phil Bardsley. Howard Webb quickly blows his whistle and gives the forward a talking to.
