Full Time: SUNDERLAND 1-0 MAN CITY. That's it, it's over. A shock win for Sunderland but one that is fully deserved. They took their one chance, City didn't take theirs.

Richards is booked for unsporting behaviour.

90mins

Four minutes of stoppage time indicated.

89mins

Manchester City: Jo comes on for Tevez but is it too little too late?

87mins

Welbeck squares the ball for Henderson, who drills a shot from 18 yards out, which is blocked by Barry. Al-Muhammadi's follow up from 25 yards is blasted over.

86mins

Nigel de Jong is booked for a series of niggly challenges.

84mins

At the other end, Welbeck darts down the left wing and crosses. The ball is cleared by Kompany but it breaks to Bardsley. His long range effort is atriocious.

83mins

Milner crosses, attempting to find Adebayor, but Bramble clears.

81mins

The game is starting to open up but still not one side looks like breaking the deadlock. In fact, the chances have dried up as defences are coming out on top.

78mins

First touch by Silva is a good one as he finds Adebayor. However, his shot is poorer as he is unable to find Milner.

78mins

Manchester City: Adam Johnson is off, David Silva is on. Unlucky on Johnson but he has largely been ineffective against Sunderland's tenacious back-line today.

75mins

The next corner is cleared and Sunderland break. However, Kompany snuffs out Bent's cross before any harm can be done at the other end.

74mins

What a save! What a save by Mignolet! From six yards out an Adebayor header is tipped behind for a corner. Absolutely top drawer!

73mins

Excellent closing down by Cattermole denies Tevez a shot at goal, as his effort is blocked by the former Middlesbrough and Wigan man.

72mins

Everything opens up for Adebayor on the left-hand side but Ferdinand is there again to deny City. He's having a top game this afternoon, the Sunderland defender.

70mins

Manchester City: Emmanuel Adebayor replaces Joleon Lescott. Definitely an attacking move by Roberto Mancini. City switch to a 4-4-2 - let's see if it's enough.

68mins

Richards is back on the field, Milner has the ball but Sunderland again stop the move before it has really started.

67mins

Bardsley dispossesses Yaya Toure far too easily and Al-Muhammadi launches another teasing ball into the City box. Kolo clears, Richards collides with him and now he's injured.

67mins

It's all Sunderland here as they strive for a goal. And they look like they could get one too. Where City dominated possession in the first half, Sunderland have dominated the second. Only one team looks like scoring here - and it's not City.

66mins

Break on! Welbeck feeds Bent, whose shot is blocked. The ball goes back to Welbeck but a lack of composure sees the ball sail over the bar. Should have done better really from 12 yards.

66mins

Johnson finds Milner who tries the left-footed curling shot, looking for the bottom right hand corner. Ferdinand makes an excellent block.

64mins

City are disjointed - there's no rhythm to be seen. Their second half play is summed up by a Yaya Toure backheel which goes straight to Bramble. Prickly times for City fans.

62mins

Milner rounds Bramble as if he was a stripy traffic cone and manages to get a cross in. Ferdinand clears but the ball goes straight back to Milner. His long range effort is poor.

59mins

Corner whipped in but it's easily cleared. The ball breaks to Bardsley but his long-range effort is comfortably collected by Hart.

59mins

Sunderland are getting more into the game and force City to concede another corner as Bent's pressure caused Kolo Toure to panic.

58mins

A soft free-kick is awarded for a Kolo Toure foul on Welbeck. Richardson gets his shot all wrong as it flies wide of the goal. It is not troubling Hart whatsoever.

57mins

Hart caught out of position by Al-Muhammadi and he is forced to concede a cheap corner. Nothing comes from the dead ball, which is headed clear by Kolo Toure.

55mins

Shot by Yaya Toure, left-footed from the right. Excellent block by Ferdinand.

54mins

A Malbranque cross is not dealt with by Kompany, causing Hart to scramble from goal and clear with Bent loitering.

53mins

At the other end, Tevez finds Richards but he scuffs his shot and it goes harmlessly out for a goal kick. How many moves are City going to waste today?

52mins

Al-Muhammadi's pace is causing City all sorts of problems but when he gets the ball he isn't doing an awful lot with it. Here, he wins a free kick from Barry.

51mins

Al-Muhammadi cross, cleared by Kompany. This is the best spell of the game for Sunderland.

50mins

Richardson lays off Malbranque but oh dear! Oh deary deary dear. Dreadful cross from the Frenchman. It goes behind the byline.

49mins

Free kicks, throw-ins and concessions - a scrappy period of play as each side tries to establish themselves in the second half.

47mins

Long ball from Bardsley finds Bent but he is flagged offside. This is more positive from the Black Cats. Bardsley is on at right-back by the way, with Ferdinand taking Turner's position in the centre.

46mins

The second half has started.

46mins

Sunderland: Danny Welbeck replaces Fraizer Campbell who has failed to recover from his clash late in the first half.

Sunderland: Phil Bardsley replaces Michael Turner.

Half Time: SUNDERLAND 0-0 MAN CITY. For all of City's dominance, Sunderland have been resolute in defence.

45mins

Milner corner, Bramble clearance and that's the end of the first half.

45mins

Shot by Yaya Toure, six yards out. Surely he must score but no! Mignolet is there to turn the ball around the post. Extraordinary! Will City get the breakthrough today?

45mins

Two minutes of stoppage time signalled.

44mins

A battle for possession between Campbell and Richards leaves the former in need of medical treatment.

43mins

That man is there again as Turner clears the ball with Tevez loitering. Good ball from Milner behind the Black Cats defence.

42mins

Johnson receives a lay-off from Tevez on the edge of the box and the former Middlesbrough man takes a shot, which goes out for a throw after it was blocked.

40mins

A rare Sunderland attack through Al-Muhammadi is thwarted by Lescott.

39mins

Sunderland's hero so far - Michael Turner - returns to action as the Black Cats continue to defend for their lives.

38mins

Tevez, then Barry have the ball at their feet but they can find no way through the red and white striped wall. City are static in attack and need to go wide more. They really are lacking in ideas this afternoon.

37mins

Milner. Tevez. Milner. But Henderson challenges and wins the ball - City profligate again.

35mins

Lescott's run comes to a premature halt through Turner's brilliant blocking. It's a City corner but the Sunderland man is hurt, hobbling off after receiving a blow to his right ankle.

35mins

Knock knock who's there? Yet another City attack but it breaks down eight yards from goal. If City are to get a goal today, they are going to have to improve in the final third. Meanwhile, Ferdinand and Turner are imperious for the Black Cats.

34mins

A rare Sunderland shot through Henderson but it's not troubling anyone.

33mins

It's all hands in defence for Sunderland as City keep plugging away. Tevez tries to dink the ball into the box but Mignolet reads the situation well, diving at Yaya Toure's feet to prevent him from getting a shot away.

31mins

Johnson on the right this time and wins a free kick around 25 yards from goal. Barry tries to chip it into the box towards Tevez but the Black Cats read it and clear.

29mins

Great run by Johnson as he is fed by Toure but an excellent tackle by the Sundelrnad left-back snuffs out that threat.

28mins

Can Tevez redeem himself for his earlier miss? No. He should have passed to Toure but he selfishly took on the shot himself. Good block by Turner.

26mins

De Jong commits another foul, gifting the Black Cats a free-kick. Henderson dinks the ball into the City box but Turner cannot direct his header towards goal.

22mins

Sunderland leave more space down the right and Milner drifts in. However, he cannot penetrate the Sunderland back-line and the move breaks down. Disappointing.

19mins

It's all City now as they look to force a breakthrough. They get their first corner of the game down the right, and from it, Kompany hits it on the volley but it cannons off Bent and harmlessly into midfield. Good chance that one.

18mins

A shocker for Tevez! Yaya Toure skips past Cattermole in midfield and plays the ball into the Argentine star. It's 3 on 1 here! With Mignolet nowhere and the goal gaping, Tevez contrives to spoon his shot over the bar from 12 yards.

15mins

Al-Muhammadi wins the first corner of the game, off that man Lescott again. An intriguing battle is being set up between those two. Corner played short, it's whipped in but headed clear.

13mins

Both teams have started well, playing neat and attacking football. However, both have been spreading the tackles about too. A good game is on the cards.

11mins

Sunderland are coming at City, not frightened of their superstars, as Campbell darts down the left. His effort is deflected and Hart comfortably collects.

8mins

The poor shot hasn't thwarted the Egyptian though, who darts at Lescott once more. However, poor ball control lets him down as he meekly kicks the ball against the defender.

7mins

Lescott retreats and retreats and retreats some more, allowing Al-Muhammadi to shoot from 25 yards. However, he smashes the ball well over.

6mins

What Toure can do, Cattermole can do better as his expertly timed challenge wins back possession. Malbranque wins a free-kick on the right and his whipped in ball is met by Bent's head. However, the effort is wayward.

5mins

A delicious one-two between Campbell and Bent is thwarted by a clattering challenge from Kolo Toure. That's gotta hurt!

3mins

Milner attempts the cross but is thwarted by Bramble, who makes the clearance.

2mins

Lescott tries to bomb forward, hoping to force an early breakthrough. However, Tevez could not read it and the move breaks down.

Match Preview

Big-spending Manchester City travel to Sunderland's Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon and they will be out to consolidate their place in the upper echelons of the Premier League with a victory.

Roberto Mancini will be pleased that his team grabbed a goalless draw at Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the campaign before seeing off Liverpool 3-0 on Monday.

Gareth Barry's opener put the Citizens in control before a Carlos Tevez brace closed out the victory.

With new boys Yaya Toure and James Milner impressing at Eastlands, Mancini will be confident of seeing off Steve Bruce's Black Cats this weekend.

However, the north-east outfit will be hoping their vociferous home crowd will shout them to a much-needed win of their own after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Despite leading Birmingham City by two goals on their first outing, late efforts from Scott Dann and Liam Ridgewell ensured they only picked up a point and a late effort from West Bromwich Albion man Peter Odemwingie saw Sunderland fall to a 1-0 loss at The Hawthorns.

Bruce must lift his troops for the clash, but it won't be easy against a City side that is likely to feature Tevez, Milner, David Silva, Vincent Kompany and Micah Richards.

The hosts have a number of absentees for the weekend with David Meyler (cruciate ligament), Craig Gordon (arm), George McCartney (ankle), Andy Reid (Achilles) and John Mensah (hamstring) all missing out.

Summer signings Mario Balotelli and Jerome Boateng (both knee) are closing in on a return, but Serbia full-back Aleksandar Kolarov (ankle) has been ruled out.

Last season, the two sides played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light as a stunning curling effort from Adam Johnson late in the day cancelled out Kenwyne Jones' early headed opener.

At the City of Manchester Stadium, Sunderland fell just short in a seven-goal thriller.

The home side flew out of the blocks and scored early efforts through Roque Santa Cruz and Tevez, but Sunderland hit back through Mensah and Jordan Henderson.

Craig Bellamy put City back in front only for Jones to level up on the hour.
