Sunderland are dropping deeper into their own half here as they look to hold on to this slender lead, while they still look dangerous on the break.

Craig Bellamy plays a ball in from the right and Carlos Tevez looks certain to score at the near post but again Craig Gordon pulls off a great save at point-blank range to deny him. A follow up shot is blocked as Sunderland hang on.

City are pressing but fair play to Sunderland they are standing firm as Gareth Barry is just offside as he tries to latch on to a great Patrick Vieira pass.

Craig Bellamy goes on a charge up field to get on the end of a Roque Santa Cruz pass and John Mensah goes down after running into him. But strangely Chris Foy awards a free kick to Sunderland.

Shaun Wright-Phillips wastes a great chance to set up a City chance as he knocks the ball out down the right. A second glance and it was harsh as the whole ball had not crossed the by line.

It is turning into a great contest now as Sunderland have fought back after good pressure from City in this second half.

Fraizer Campbell wins a free kick down the left side of the area. It is played into the box by Jordan Henderson and Joleon Lescott has to virtually head it off his own line.

Gareth Barry and David Meyler have a bit of a dust up in the middle of the park here. It could be trouble for both players.

The rain is coming down and it's windy but City's game has improved significantly in the opening 10 minutes of this second half.

A quick break from Sunderland but Fraizer Campbell cannot keep his chip from the left side of the area away from Shay Given who gratefully plucks it out of the air.

A bright start to the half from City who are putting Sunderland under a bit of pressure for the first time in the game.

It seems City are adopting more of a long ball game now Roque Santa Cruz is on the field as the pitch does not appear conducive to a passing game.

An Alan Hutton cross into the area from the right is flicked out for a corner to Sunderland.

Carlos Tevez tries a very ambitious shot from well outside the area but it ends up trickling into the hands of Craig Gordon via a slight deflection.

The game is held up for a moment as Shay Given is allowed time to tie up his boot laces and he gets it in the neck from the home fans as he does so.

Kenwyne Jones' cross from the right is only cleared to David Meyler who hits a shot straight at Shay Given.from just outside the area.

Sunderland are buzzing after that goal as City almost break but Craig Bellamy is flagged well offside.

A strange free kick here as John Mensah is penalised for a foul on Carlos Tevez despite not really doing anything. Fortunately for Sunderland it came to nothing.

There is a good atmosphere at the Stadium of Light from both sets of fans with a good following travelling across the Pennines from Manchester.

John Mensah does well to recover and avoids conceding a corner after a bobble on the pitch almost caught him out.

Sunderland are just edging the early possession here but no real opportunities for either side as former Newcastle keeper Shay Given is getting some stick from the home fans when he touches the ball.
