Robinho is again guilty of missing a chance to score as Marton Fulop again denies him with a great save as he concedes a corner.

A free kick for Sunderland is taken by Andy Reid into the City area but the ball is cleared by the home side.

Sunderland clear the corner and have four minutes of stoppage time to try and grab a share of the spoils.

Craig Bellamy plays in Robinho who tries to twist and turn in the area before playing in Gelson Fernandes and his effort is touched behind by Marton Fulop.

The corner is played short by Blumer Elano to Javier Garrido. He knocks it back to Blumer Elano whose cross eludes three defenders and almost lets in Robinho who can't convert.

Blumer Elano gets forward and hits an effort which Marton Fulop manages to finger tip over the cross bar for a corner to City.

From the resulting free kick Sunderland win a corner down the left hand side. Carlos Edwards plays it in to the centre but Danny Collins falls and heads it out for a goal kick.

Sunderland have enjoyed a great spell of presure in recent minutes and they could still get something here against all the odds.

The Sunderland corner comes into the centre and the ball almost ends up in the net off defender Nedum Onuoha. From the second corner Sunderland get a chance through Grant Leadbitter but his effort is straight at Shay Given.

Sunderland are screaming for a penalty after Danny Collins put the ball into the area it came off Nedum Onuoha. But a corner is all they get from the referee.

Djibril Cisse tries to play in Andy Reid but Richard Dunne does well to get in a tackle and gives a corner away. The ball is played in by Carlos Edwards but cleared by Vincent Kompany.

City win a corner off Anton Ferdinand. It is taken by Blumer Elano but it is cleared initially, before the ball back goes out for a throw in.

Sunderland are still competing here and they will stay hopeful if they can keep it 1-0 for as long as possible.

Phil Bardsley is back on now and he wins a corner off Pablo Zabaleta. Carlos Edwards plays it in but City manage to clear.

Shaun Wright-Phillips manages to get a ball into the middle from the right and Robinho cannot convert the chance as Phil Bardsley goes down with a knock after putting off the Brazilian hitman.

Marton Fulop manages to hack the ball away despite Robinho breathing down his neck. Risky stuff from the Sunderland keeper.

Kenwyne Jones goes down inside the City area but the referee says no penalty there despite some contact with the big striker.

Back to the other end and Blumer Elano somehow fails to make it 2-0 when he picks up a Micah Richards cross in the area but fires wide from six yards.

Grant Leadbitter tries to get Sunderland back on level terms but Shay Given saves his effort at the second attempt.

Micah Richards gets to the byline and crosses for Shaun Wright-Phillips who fires his effort well over the bar. His finishing has let him down badly so far in this game.

City are now enjoying the majority of the possession but the Sunderland defence is holding firm.

Dean Whitehead's overhead kick almost plays in Kenwyne Jones but the ball runs through to former Newcastle keeper Shay Given who is getting some stick off the Sunderland fans behind him.

The ball rebounds to Shaun Wright-Phillips on the edge of the area but his effort at goal is blocked and City are denied again.

The flag is up for offside here as Blumer Elano tries to play in Micah Richards so Sunderland breathe a sigh of relief and get a free kick.

Carlos Edwards already forces Richard Dunne into conceding a very early corner but City manage to defend it as Robinho hits the deck easily looking for a free kick.

It is Sunderland who are finishing the half the stronger with several crosses into the City area but they fail to test Shay Given.

Just two minutes of stoppage time which is surprising as the penalty incident took longer than that to sort out earlier in this half.

We are approaching the half time interval and Sunderland will be delighted to go in at the break on level terms having done well since going down to ten men.

A promising move by Sunderland as Carlos Edwards gets to the byline and crosses in but Danny Collins commits a foul in the area as he goes for the ball.

Micah Richards wins a corner off Danny Collins for City. Blumer Elano plays it in from the right but it is headed over Valeri Bojinov.

Kenwyne Jones has a pop at the City goal but it fails to really test Shay Given who gathers comfortably.

Vincent Kompany gets the ball off Valeri Bojinov and hits an effort over the top of Marton Fulop's goal as City press again.

To be fair to Sunderland they are not going into ultra defnsive mode after going a man down, although City get forward again only for the final ball to go out for a goal kick.

City lost their rhythm after that penalty miss but are now looking to get their game back on track.

A ball into the area from Shaun Wright-Phillips is headed at goal by Valeri Bojinov but it is straight at Marton Fulop.

Carlos Edwards tries his luck from around the edge of the area and his shot fizzes just over the crossbar.

It has been a crazy opening 20 minutes or so of this game here and City will be wondering how they are not two goals ahead against their ten man opponents.

Unbelievable stuff here as Marton Fulop has guessed right and saves Robinho's very poor penalty so Sunderland are still on level terms.

City have dominated here and Shaun Wright-Phillips looks to be hauled down by George McCartney right on the edge of the area here.

It has been a lively start here and Sunderland look like they will try and sit back and nick something on the break, but no real chances just yet.
