Match Report

Stockport County hung on for a priceless win against Darlington - one of their main League Two promotion rivals.

Stockport created the first opening inside three minutes. Their new boys combined as Stephen Gleeson teed up Ryan Lowe, but his shot was saved by Quakers keeper David Stockdale.

Lowe went off early on with a shoulder injury, and his replacement Tommy Rowe then went close after 19 minutes.

He latched onto a throughball from Liam Dickinson but saw his shot bravely blocked by Darlo centre-back Steve Foster.

Dickinson raced clear just before the half-hour mark, but then blazed an angled shot well wide.

The hosts were well on top but, after Dickinson's initial 34th-minute shot had been spilled by Stockdale, Anthony Pilkington could not quite force home the loose ball.

Stockport did get their goal three minutes later though. Rowe's low shot bounced out off the post, but Dickinson was on hand to ram home his 17th goal of the season.

Darlington were denied an equaliser by a world-class save from John Ruddy on 54 minutes.

Rob Purdie crossed for Tommy Wright, but Ruddy dived full length to somehow keep out the big front-man's header.

Minutes later Ruddy did well to keep out Jason Kennedy's low strike from 15 yards as County held on to clinch a vital three points.
