Match Preview

Mentality to blame for Buddies' failings Danny Lennon believes the lack of a winning mentality rather than ability has prevented St Mirren achieving a top-six finish in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League this season. The Buddies boss made that his target at the start of the campaign but 14 draws to date - the most of all the SPL sides - have helped scupper those hopes. Ahead of the visit of Kilmarnock, Lennon, whose side sit in ninth place looking for their first league win since beating Rangers on Christmas Eve, said: "I certainly believe with the players that we have, we have the ability to make the top six. "I felt that it was a realistic target for a club of our size - look at Motherwell, who have hit the top six consistently in recent seasons, and look at the fantastic season St Johnstone have had. "What we certainly don't have is the winning mentality to do that, to see games out, be galvanised and adapt to changes in the game. "There is progress there, there is no doubt about that. "When I came in last season we were on the floor, this season we are touching the skirting boards and there is a long, long way to go before we can hit that ceiling and I am under no illusions about that. "But if we can improve bit by bit each season then we can certainly reach those heights. "It is very frustrating. It's not with lack of commitment or endeavour, we just have to get over the psychological barrier. "We need to turn draws into wins, which is what we haven't been able to do as much as we wanted. "With seven games remaining, there is bonus money for players, budgets for players coming in (to be considered) and the fans want to see us finish on a high and try to reach the standards we set up until Christmas, when we flirted with with the top-six area. "Since defeating Rangers we have stagnated a wee bit so we are looking for that 'bouncebackability' so we can finish the season as strong as what we started." Lennon paid tribute to Killie, who won the Scottish Communities League Cup for the first time against Celtic at Hampden a fortnight ago. "They have had a fine couple of seasons," he said. "Mixu (Paatelainen) came in and won SPL manager of the year when Killie played some wonderful football, and Kenny (Shiels) has picked up the reins. "He has shuffled the squad, but he still has very good quality and achieved what many managers hope to do, in winning a major trophy. "Some are in the game for many, many years and don't achieve anything like that and so I applaud that achievement in lifting the League Cup. "It is something that we would love to emulate at St Mirren." St Mirren defender Jeroen Tesselaar is fit for the clash. The Dutchman came off the bench against Hearts last week following his recovery from a knee operation. Kenny Shiels will see one of his favourite teams in action when he takes his Kilmarnock side to Paisley. The Killie boss is a self-confessed fan of the way the Buddies play the game, with the emphasis on passing, although he is hoping they are not at their best at New St Mirren Park. Shiels told Press Association Sport: "I watched St Mirren against Hearts the other week and I couldn't believe how good they were. "Every time I have watched them they have played well, they are just not getting the breaks at the moment and I am hoping that continues to be honest against us. "But I enjoy going to watch them and I watch them a lot because I like their style. "I also watch Falkirk, Hamilton and Livingston as well, those are good teams to watch. "Football is about having an enjoyable game and watching the patterns that exist within the game and I think I have seen that with St Mirren this season. "They push their full-backs forward, they have a deep-sitting midfield player and they try to pass through teams. "I think they are very brave in how they play, it is good to see and it is a good product that they have." Paul Heffernan (thigh) and Zdenek Kroca (knee) are out for Killie, but midfielder Liam Kelly returns to the squad following the death of his father recently. Danny Buijs (hamstring), Ryan O'Leary (knee), Manuel Pascali (broken leg) and David Silva (calf) are still out but defender Mohamadou Sissoko and midfielder Dean Shiels are back from suspension.
