Match Report

Ten-man Hamilton held on for a precious point in a relegation battle against St Mirren at New Douglas Park.

The point will suit Hamilton a lot more than their visitors, who now haven't won away from home in five attempts.

Accies were reduced to ten men in the 82nd minute when goalkeeper Tomas Cerny sent Craig Dargo flying as he darted into the box and, although the offence correctly merited a free-kick, it also saw Stephen Finnie flash a straight red at the Czech.

Hamilton had edged a poor first half in terms of chances, although St Mirren should have scored a minute before the break.

A defensive error gave Billy Mehmet a clear shot at goal, but Martin Canning superbly threw himself at the ball to block.

Hamilton threatened first in five minutes when James McCarthy's ball over the top released Joel Thomas and, although the striker did well to get past the last line of defence, goalkeeper Mark Howard blocked his shot.

Saints hit back in 12 minutes when Garry Brady's corner from the right was played by Gary Mason to Steven Thomson on the edge of the box. He picked out Dargo and his cross was headed past the back post by Canning.

Brady's corner was again played back to Thomson, with his low 20-yard effort well taken by Cerny.

In 33 minutes Thomas sent James Gibson down the left and his cross was headed away from James McArthur, who looked destined to score at the near post.

Nine minutes later McCarthy took a pass from Gibson and darted past Scott Cuthbert on the right, only to see his low effort crash off the right post.

The second half had fewer chances of note although, to their credit, both sides tried to win the game.

Accies should have scored in 58 minutes when Gibson sent McCarthy down the right and his cutback was swept just past the right post by Thomas, sliding in.

In 63 minutes a defensive error let Brady through on the left and, although he had time for the ball to bounce, he sent a shot wildly over from a good position.

A neat move involving Thomas and Neil saw sub Paul McGowan return the ball to the Accies striker in 69 minutes, only for him to volley over from 16 yards.

St Mirren had a chance to win the game four minutes into stoppage time when Brady's corner was cleared to Thomson and he picked out John Potter on the right, but he sliced well wide of the near post.
