St Mirren have survived for another season in the SPL, but Gretna's fairytale officially came to a halt at Love Street. St Mirren had a touch more class than Gretna and it was enough to secure a 2-0 victory. The scoreline could have been more emphatic, with the home side missing a host of chances and twice hitting the woodwork. The home side almost got the early goal they craved, but Jim Hamilton shot wide from the edge of the box. Gretna, on 11 minutes, created a good chance, but Nicky Deverdics headed wide, after Chris Smith in the Saints goal had flapped at a Paul Murray free-kick. On 21 minutes, Andy Dorman's terrific free-kick, after a foul on Craig Dargo, missed a host of defenders and found John Potter unmarked at the back post, but he blasted wide from close range. On 26 minutes, Dorman's 20-yard free-kick was pushed away by Greg Fleming in the Gretna goal and as St Mirren kept up the pressure, Dorman got another chance to cross, this time he found Hamilton and his mis-hit shot ran nicely for Dargo and he lashed home his first goal for Saints. Three minutes later Dargo almost got his second, after a goalmouth scramble that the Gretna defence could not clear, but he lifted his shot from close range over. In the next attack Dargo showed great speed to get on the end of Will Haining's long clearance but his first-time effort went just over. Dargo came even closer moments later when he sprang the offside trap to get on the end of Dorman's pass, only to see his shot come back off the post and Gretna cleared. Fleming made a great save at the start of the second half to push away a Dorman shot for a corner, but Saints were not to be denied as Billy Mehmet doubled Saints' lead with a left-foot shot after Dorman's corner fell kindly. Hugh Murray sent a great pass wide to release Mehmet midway through the second half and, at the second attempt, he got his cross to the back post to Hamilton, but his header hit the bar and went over. Gretna's Deverdics then ran half the length of the field and into the box, only to see his angled drive go just wide. Ten minutes from the end the Buddies created the perfect opportunity to score again, when Dorman set up Stewart Kean for a one-on-one with the keeper, but Fleming stood tall to save. The Gretna dream was over, but their players left the field to a standing ovation from both sets of fans.
