Match Preview

Slutski wants CSKA show CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutski is expecting Sparta Prague to put on a display for their fans at Stadion Letna, even though both teams are already safely through to the last 32. The Russian side, winners of the UEFA Cup in 2005, thrashed Group F whipping boys Lausanne 5-1 last time out to maintain their 100% record. Sparta will also go into Friday's draw after they made sure of second place after taking a point when their trip to Palermo ended 2-2. Despite there being little other than pride to play for, Slutski is expecting an entertaining game. "While it is clear the job has been done with both teams qualified and we have taken first place ahead of Sparta, I am convinced that Prague will try to show good football in front of their fans," he said. Slutski will mix up his team selection. "Elvir Rahimic has not trained much, and Aleksei Berezutski missed quite a lot of time. Alan Dzagoev, Tomas Necid, Sekou Oliseh and Georgi Schennikov are young, but they are happy to train and prepare for the game," he said. "In general, I do not think that these players have any problems." As for the prospect of who might await in the knockout stages, the CSKA Moscow coach reflected: "I prefer not to think about such things. "We will know on Friday who we will get, and we will then begin to quietly prepare for the match." Prague were also happy to have already secured qualification ahead of the final game of Group F. Midfielder Juraj Kucka said: "If it was decided in the final round against CSKA, it would have been terribly hard, so it is good to have sorted it all out when we were away in Palermo." Sparta coach Jozef Chovanec feels his side are flying the flag for Czech football. "Our progress is important because Czech football does not accomplish much throughout the year," he said. "The structure of competition is uncompromising, and from the first rounds you play demanding games - European football has settled down, so now if we encounter a Cypriot or Belarusian team, it does not mean an automatic and easy win." CSKA - who with 17 goals are the competition's top scorers in the group stage - won the first meeting between these sides on Matchday 2, when two Seydou Doumbia goals either side of a Mark Gonzalez penalty gave the Russians a 3-0 win. Sparta, meanwhile, are competing in the group stage of Europe's second tier competition for the fourth time in five seasons, but this is the first time they have made it through to the last 32.

Match Report

Moscow lose 100% record CSKA Moscow relinquished their 100% record in this season's Europa League in a 1-1 draw with Sparta Prague but it hardly mattered to the Group F winners. They had to settle for a point at the Stadion Letna in bitingly cold conditions in the Czech Republic capital as Sparta Prague proved capable opponents. Alan Dzagoev gave CSKA an early lead, but Sparta found a leveller before half-time from Vaclav Kadlec - and the hosts hit the post at the death. There was little for the teams to play for, given CSKA had already won the group and Sparta were certain to finish second and join their opponents in the last 32. CSKA headed to the Czech Republic with one of only two records - their Russian rivals Zenit St Petersburg had the other - showing five wins from five matches in this season's Europa League. They beat Sparta 3-0 in Moscow on September 30, when two Seydou Doumbia goals came either side of a Mark Gonzalez penalty. And the Russians went in front after 15 minutes on a snow-flecked pitch tonight when Dzagoev drilled in a low shot from around 12 yards. Sparta had been on top before the goal arrived, with Manuel Pamic drawing a parried save from goalkeeper Sergei Chepchugov barely a couple of minutes earlier. Chepchugov turned away a headed effort from Bony Wilfred soon after the goal, before CSKA, settled by their goal, began to show their quality. Zoran Tosic sent a shot the wrong side of the right post in the 37th minute, but CSKA were jolted when Sparta found an equaliser in the 44th minute, Jakub Podany headed the ball down and Kadlec, evading two lurking defenders, drove a shot into the right corner from 15 yards. CSKA's Tomas Necid threatened to restore the visitors' lead twice in the early stages of the second half but sent a 20-yard effort wide and then saw his next shot, from a shorter distance, saved by Daniel Zitka. Zitka made another stop in the 65th minute when he caught a 25-yard effort from Eugeni Aldonin, and then produced a more difficult save on the 70-minute mark when he repelled Necid's 18-yard strike. Sparta substitute Leonard Kweuke planted a header wide of the right post as the Czech side continued to look for a winning goal, and with 30 seconds remaining the Cameroonian went frustratingly close to a winner when his shot from 16 yards hit the post.
