Match Preview

Dickinson to face Owls Southport go into the biggest game in their recent history against Sheffield Wednesday without regular goalkeeper Tony McMillan. McMillan misses the FA Cup First Round tie against the League One side after he was sent off in the recent league fixture against Kidderminster. That means veteran goalkeeper Steve Dickinson will take his place. Defender Rob Marsh-Evans also misses out as he is ineligible, while striker Matty McNeil is a slight doubt with a calf injury. He faces a late fitness test. Midfielder Liam Blakeman could return to the starting XI after being rested against Harriers, while either Tony Gray or Steve Daly could come in for McNeil if he is ruled out. Defender Robbie Williams is another player pushing for a start. Jon Otsemobor will be back in contention for Wednesday after serving a suspension. The versatile defender has missed the last three games after his straight red card at Yeovil and is expected to take a place on the bench. But Owls manager Alan Irvine could be without winger Jermaine Johnson, who lasted the full 90 minutes in the midweek home defeat to Huddersfield only to finish with hamstring trouble. Midfielder Tommy Miller missed out against Huddersfield due to a thigh problem, but is expected to return to the squad. Irvine, whose side have lost their last two league games, has no other injury or suspension problems for the Blue Square Bet Premier side.

Match Report

Clinical finishing sends Owls through Southport`s big day was ruined by a ruthless display of finishing from Sheffield Wednesday as an amazing second-half flurry of goals saw the game end 5-2 to the League One side. The Blue Square Bet Premier side equalised twice shortly after the interval, but ultimately the Owls` superior class and fitness won the day. It was a relatively quiet first half. Gary Teale bagged Wednesday's opener in the 11th minute as he latched onto Clinton Morrison's low cross across the six-yard box. Giles Coke saw a curling effort strike the crossbar in the 35th minute, but the match lit up just after the break thanks to an amazing 12-minute spell which brought six goals. Southport got their dream leveller in the 52nd minute when ex-Liverpool trainee Paul Barratt tucked home, but Neil Mellor put Wednesday back in front a minute later with a close-range finish. Southport sub Matty McGinn rifled in dramatically with his first kick to make it 2-2, but then Wednesday cut loose. Morrison scored two quick goals inside three minutes - the first into the top corner from close in and the second a well-taken drive into the bottom corner - before defender Tommy Spurr tapped home to make it 5-2 in the 64th minute. Wednesday substitute Paul Heffernan almost made it six with five minutes to go, but his header struck the crossbar.
