Sturrock to stick with winning formula Boss Paul Sturrock has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Southend's home clash with Torquay. Sturrock will be reluctant to make many changes to a side that is currently enjoying a seven-match unbeaten run which includes six consecutive victories. Midfielder Lee Sawyer could return having recovered from a thigh injury and then successfully completed a run in the reserves. Barry Corr is the only long-term absentee as the striker continues to recover from a knee injury. Sturrock goes into the match wary of a Gulls backlash following their 5-2 defeat against Gillingham last week. He told BBC Essex: "They're a good passing team who work very hard to get themselves into the right areas. It's a wounded animal we're playing against." Martin Ling will continue to keep faith the the same set of players as Torquay look to reverse their slide down the league. The Gulls' 5-2 defeat against Gillingham extended their winless streak in League Two to seven matches. Daniel Leadbitter is pushing to make only his second ever Football League appearance, while winger Ian Morris (knee) is a long-term absentee. Manager Ling insists there is no crisis at Plainmoor, and refuses to panic despite their alarming loss of form. "I don't think it's crisis point at this moment in time," Ling told BBC Devon. "There are positives there but there's an awful lot of negatives. I do feel the answers are within the squad, it's just for me to find them answers."

Shrimpers march on Southend extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in the league after trouncing torrid Torquay 4-1 at Roots Hall, with all of their goals coming in the second half. The promotion pushing Shrimpers struggled to break down the visitors in the first half but they ran riot after the break, with midfielder Kane Ferdinand bagging a brace. He opened the scoring just 20 seconds after the interval when he latched on to a deflected right-wing cross from Michael Timlin. And he then doubled his tally in the 54th minute by brilliantly volleying home a deep right-wing cross from Neil Harris. Southend remained on top and, in the 66th minute, Paul Sturrock's men made it 3-0 as top-goalscorer Liam Dickinson latched on to Timlin's through ball and blasted a low 20-yard shot in to the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Four minutes later, defender Mark Phillips headed a left-wing corner from Ryan Hall past Robert Olejnik . But Torquay, who have now not won for eight games, hit back with a consolation strike 13 minutes from time when Mark Ellis found the target.
