Martin set for Shrimpers bow
David Martin is set to make his Southend debut in the home match against Port Vale.
The left winger joined from npower Championship club Derby on Wednesday, signing an 18-month contract at Roots Hall.
Elliot Benyon made his debut in the 1-1 draw against Dagenham and is likely to retain his place in attack alongside Liam Dickinson.
Boss Paul Sturrock hinted there could be more incoming transfers for the Shrimpers.
"I'm always looking to strengthen the squad," he told the club's official website.
Sturrock also expects out-of-favour utility-man Bilel Mohsni to remain at the club for the rest of the season despite being sidelined for disciplinary issues. The 24-year-old has been sent off twice and booked nine times this season.
Vale manager Micky Adams will travel with a depleted squad.
Goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson (groin) and midfielder Rob Taylor (calf) are absent through injury, while loan signings Shane O'Connor (Ipswich), Andrew Little (Rangers), Jennison Myrie-Williams and Guy Madjo (both Stevenage) have all returned to their parent clubs.
Young defender Phil Roe (dead leg) is also unavailable and midfielder Sam Morsy (shin) and striker Ben Williamson (knee) are major doubts after suffering injuries during an outing for the reserve team on Wednesday afternoon.
Gareth Owen will be assessed after the defender played with stitches in a foot wound for 78 minutes of the 2-1 home defeat to Cheltenham on Bank Holiday Monday.
Long-term absentees Lewis Haldane (broken leg) and Ryan Burge (knee) are continuing their rehabilitation.
Shrimpers surge to second
Southend got their promotion push back on track with a comfortable 3-0 win over 10-man Port Vale in npower League Two.
Mark Phillips headed the Shrimpers in front in the eighth minute with their first effort on goal. The centre-back jumped unmarked at the back post to head Ryan Hall's corner into the top of the Vale goal.
Hall remained a threat, taking a couple of shots that went narrowly wide, before the right winger's diagonal cross was headed into the right-hand side of the goal by an unmarked Liam Dickinson in the 29th minute.
The Valiants could only produce tame efforts from skipper Marc Richards and Sean Rigg, which were easily held by Glenn Morris.
Vale shipped a third goal in the 55th minute when Peter Gilbert's cross from the byline was inexplicably turned into his own net by centre-back Gareth Owen, who had earlier done well to clear off the line after Chris Martin had parried a Hall shot.
And the visitors' day got worse in the 64th minute when Clayton McDonald was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
