Mohsni back for Shrimpers Southend boss Paul Sturrock could recall Bilel Mohsni for the home game against Macclesfield. The 23-year-old defender, who had been missing for a month with an ankle injury, returned to the bench against Bury and scored the equaliser with a strong header soon after coming on as a make-shift striker at the weekend. However, he is likely to replace Kane Ferdinand at the back against the Silkmen. Lee Sawyer, in his third term at the club following spells in 2008 and 2009, is also pushing for a start after a 21-minute appearance on his return to Roots Hall. Experienced defender Mark Phillips has been in the squad twice since returning from four-and-a-half months out with hamstring and groin problems but is yet to get any game time so he will also be hoping to finally see some first-team action. Macclesfield boss Gary Simpson could hand Emile Sinclair a start. The striker made his return from a hamstring injury as a second-half substitute in Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Barnet and after adding pace to the Silkmen's attack, he could have done enough to earn a starting spot. Defensive duo Carl Tremarco and Shaun Brisley remain sidelined with their hip problems but while Tremarco is expected to be out for another few weeks, Brisley should return to training in the next week. Left-sided defender Tony Diagne will be looking to make his debut. The Frenchman, who signed for the club last week, was an unused substitute against the Bees and he is expected to remain on the bench. Veteran striker Simon Yeo could be part of the squad for the first time since re-signing for Town on non-contract terms last week but due to a lack of match sharpness, he will only start from the bench if involved at all.

Match Report

Southend thump Silkmen Southend hammered Macclesfield 4-1 to secure their first home win since October. The Blues raced into a four-goal half-time lead with Bilel Mohsni netting the first in the 17th minute when he fired home a cross from Ryan Hall. Southend doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Hall rifled home a left-foot shot past a diving Jose Veiga. Centre-back Mohsni grabbed the equaliser for Southend against Bury on Friday night after being brought on as a makeshift striker. But the Frenchman looked perfectly at home up front as he grabbed his second of the night in the 39th minute after Hall's cross fell for Mohsni to slot home. And Blues skipper Craig Easton marked Burns' Night in the 43rd minute by guiding the ball into the net after Mohsni's shot took a deflection off a defender. Southend pressed for a fifth goal but it was Macclesfield who found the back of the net in the 79th minute when Daniel scored from 12 yards from Hamza Bencherif's cross.
