Match Preview

Sturrock to check on duo Southend boss Paul Sturrock will wait on the fitness of Kane Ferdinand and his son, Blair, before naming his squad for the home clash with Gillingham. The former has missed the last three games with an ankle injury, while Sturrock sat out the 2-1 defeat at Morecambe through illness. However, both could return to the Shrimpers squad to face the Gills. Midfielder Lee Sawyer is pushing for a starting role after an impressive performance off the bench at the weekend, but French defender Bilel Mohsni still faces around three weeks on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage. Winger Ryan Hall should again play despite being on bail following his conviction for a charge of affray. Josh Gowling and Simon King could return to contention to give Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler defensive options ahead of the clash with fellow play-off hopefuls Southend. Gowling and King will face late fitness tests on their ankle injuries, but, even if they are passed fit, are unlikely to replace Matt Lawrence and Garry Richards. Midfielders Luke Rooney and Joe Miller are pushing for starts but striker Dennis Oli looks set to be on the bench again due to the form of Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa. Danny Spiller remains sidelined with a fractured finger, although he could be back within two weeks. Midfielder Chris Palmer is closing in on a return from the knee injury that has sidelined him since November.

Match Report

Hall brace denies Gills Southend winger Ryan Hall twice came to the rescue to earn Southend a 2-2 draw against fellow promotion hopefuls Gillingham at Roots Hall. The visitors took the lead in the seventh minute when Curtis Weston passed inside to the onrushing Cody McDonald, who scored with a low right-footed effort into the bottom corner for his 18th goal of the season. But Blues equalised in the 15th minute when Hall curled a 30-yard free-kick around a five-man Gills wall and past Alan Julian. However, two minutes later and the away side were back in front. Blair Sturrock's foul on McDonald resulted in a penalty, and Adebayo Akinfenwa made no mistake from 12 yards as he fired low into the corner beyond the dive of Rhys Evans. Yet eight minutes after the restart Hall levelled again when he was teed up by Sturrock and blasted home into the top left corner from just inside the box. Both teams hit the woodwork while Julian and Evans made some fine saves, before Chris Barker's late goal-line clearance denied the Kent visitors victory.
