Match Preview
Gilbert looks for Shrimpers recall Peter Gilbert will be hoping to secure a place in Southend's starting line-up when they take on Chesterfield. Gilbert took part in his first match in six weeks in Wednesday`s Essex Senior Cup clash against Chelmsford City following a three-game ban. The defender made the bench for Monday`s defeat to Cheltenham and will be hoping to get the nod to start by boss Paul Sturrock. Goalkeeper Glenn Morris boosted his hopes of a recall by saving three penalties against Chelmsford. The Shrimpers prevailed in a shoot-out with the fit-again stopper impressing as he looks to displace Rhys Evans in the starting XI. Defender Mark Phillips is in contention for after recovering from a hernia problem that has kept him out since November. Chesterfield boss John Sheridan is hopeful key men Mark Allott and Craig Davies will be back for the trip to Roots Hall. Both players missed out on Monday with tight hamstrings. Allott has missed the last two matches and top scorer Davies was rested against Accrington. Right-back Jack Hunt will also be hoping for a recall after his introduction as a substitute at the Crown Ground. The on-loan Huddersfield defender lifted his side, who were 2-0 and heading for defeat. Fellow subs Deane Smalley and Scott Boden, who scored the last-gasp goals that earned the league leaders an undeserved draw, will hope they caught the eye of Sheridan, who described the performance against Stanley as his side`s worst of the season. Drew Talbot took a nasty knock on a knee in that game but carried on and he is expected to be fit. However, it is touch and go with fellow forward Dean Morgan who is still nursing the ankle injury he sustained against Stockport.

Match Report
Spireites extend lead at top Chesterfield went five points clear at the top of npower League Two following a 3-2 win over Southend in match where three of the goals came from the penalty spot. The visitors took the lead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute after Jack Hunt was brought down by Blues skipper Craig Easton. Danny Whitaker slotted the spot-kick low into the centre of the goal for this 10th goal of the season. And Chesterfield doubled the advantage in the 19th minute when Whitaker's clearance from a Southend free-kick released Dean Smalley and he raced upfield, beat left-back Johnny Herd and fired past a diving Glenn Morris for his second goal of the campaign on his first league start. The Shrimpers reduced the arrears in the 58th minute when Herd's long throw was cleared as far as Easton and the midfielder unleashed a curling 25-yard right-footed shot into the top right corner. But the Spireites restored their two-goal advantage four minutes later when Ryan Hall fouled Drew Talbot in the box Referee Roger East awarded the game's second penalty and Whitaker fired the spot-kick into the bottom right corner beyond Morris' reach. The game's third penalty went Southend's way after Ian Breckin fouled Barry Corr and although the Shrimpers striker fired into the top left-hand corner in the 83rd minute, Chesterfield held on for the win.
