Sturrock handed injury boost Southend's injury crisis is easing ahead of the match against Aldershot. Boss Paul Sturrock had 10 players sidelined for the trip to Stockport, which ended in defeat, but the Shrimpers welcome back 18-goal striker Barry Corr for the visit of the Shots. French defender Miguel Comminges is back in training after a knee injury but the game will come too soon for Bilel Mohsni (ankle). Kane Ferdinand is also in line for a return after missing the trip to Edgeley Park due to an international call-up. Sturrock revealed that Peter Gilbert had been playing with a hernia and he may be rested in preparation for next season. Lee Sawyer also has an ankle problem which may require an operation, so he will miss out. Aldershot boss Dean Holdsworth has no fresh injury concerns. Striker Damian Spencer was handed his first start in five months against Accrington last weekend after fully recovering from a knee injury and he could keep his place. Alex Rodman has made his comeback from a calf injury while fellow winger Jermaine McGlashan is struggling with an ongoing shin splints problem but is available. Youth-team graduate Adam Mekki will be included in the squad again. Forward Jack Randall broke his leg while on loan at Didcot Town recently and is a long-term absentee. Veteran left-back Jamie Vincent has left due to a lack of first-team opportunities.

Match Report

Shots hold on for rare draw Southend created a bit of history as they were held to a goalless draw by Aldershot. The teams have now met 43 times at Roots Hall but this was the first goalless draw. Aldershot created the better chances of the first half, with Southend goalkeeper Glenn Morris denying Jermaine McGlashan and former Blues midfielder Luke Guttridge. And the Shots might have gone in at half time in the lead but Morris parried Damien Spencer's close range effort, before Bilel Moshni headed Guttridge's follow-up clear in stoppage time. Southend's best chances fell to Barry Corr, who shot over from an Anthony Grant free-kick early in the game and then glanced a header from Ryan Hall's free-kick just over the crossbar. Guttridge was denied by Morris just after the break before Kane Ferdinand released Corr but his lob went over the bar having beaten Shots goalkeeper Jamie Young. Southend registered their first effort on target when Anthony Grant rifled a fine shot towards the top right corner, which was turned out by Young. At the other end of the pitch Spencer's header was parried onto his left post by Morris, before the crossbar came to Shots' rescue after Corr's shot had beaten Young. Guttridge flashed a free-kick wide of the right upright in the closing action of the match.
