Match Preview

Guly blow for Saints Guly do Prado looks set to miss Southampton's final game of the season against Walsall. The Brazilian attacker sat out Monday's win over Plymouth with the leg injury he suffered at Brentford last Saturday and is not expected to be fit. With Lee Barnard still sidelined with an ankle injury, veteran striker David Connolly is poised to partner Rickie Lambert in attack again. Teenage winger Alex Chamberlain is close to being fit after an ankle injury, but with Saints assured of promotion barring an unlikely goal difference swing, he will not be risked unnecessarily. Full-back Dan Harding could return after a hip injury while midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin (knee) and wideman Lee Holmes (ankle) were back in the squad against Plymouth after lengthy spells out and should be involved again. Walsall welcome back Emmanuel Ledesma from suspension for their survival showdown. The Argentinian playmaker completed a three-match ban with the passing of last weekend`s vital 2-0 home victory over Charlton, a result which leaves the Saddlers in pole position to retain their League One status on the final day. But Ledesma is unlikely to find himself in Walsall`s starting XI at St Mary`s, with manager Dean Smith charged with the decision whether to keep faith with the same XI who saw off the Addicks for what would be a third successive match. Smith does not have any new injury or suspension worries, with centre-back Clayton McDonald (dislocated shoulder) and full-back Aaron Lescott (knee ligament strain) the only absentees. Walsall, one point and one place clear of the drop zone, need only to match the result of Dagenham & Redbridge, who travel to Peterborough, to survive, with 22nd-placed Bristol Rovers all but relegated due to their vastly inferior goal difference.

Match Report

Starlet seals Saints promotion Alex Chamberlain sealed Southampton`s promotion and Walsall stayed in League One after Saints` 3-1 win at St Mary's. Nigel Adkins` side started well and came close to scoring after 20 minutes when Rickie Lambert crossed for David Connolly who headed down for Guly Do Prada but his shot was smothered by Jimmy Walker. Saints did score in the 26th minute though when Guly drove at the Walsall defence, cut onto his right foot and curled a wonderful shot into the far corner from just inside the box. They extended the lead when Connolly's 18-yard strike flew past the hapless Walker. Former Arsenal trainee Julian Gray curled a tremendous shot past Kelvin Davis from just outside the box in first-half injury time to bring Walsall back into the game. Just after the interval starlet Chamberlain came off the bench and with his first touch riffled a shot against the post from 18 yards. But after 67 minutes he bent a unstoppable effort into the top right-hand corner from 25-yards.
