Match Preview

Duo pushing for Saints starts Danny Butterfield and Oscar Gobern are pushing for places in the Southampton squad for the visit of Peterborough. Right-back Butterfield has recovered from a calf injury and winger Gobern is finally fit after a hip operation. Manager Nigel Adkins will definitely make at least one change to his squad after winger Jason Puncheon agreed a surprise loan switch to Millwall. Alex Chamberlain played 45 minutes for England's under-18s in midweek and came through unscathed so he should keep his place in the starting line-up. But Adkins might be tempted to make changes elsewhere after the defeat at Carlisle last week as Saints look for a sixth straight home win. Lee Barnard could line up alongside Rickie Lambert in attack after starting on the bench at Brunton Park. Peterborough will be without striker Dave Hibbert for the tricky trip. Hibbert dislocated his knee after coming off the bench during the 4-1 FA Cup replay win over Stockport on Tuesday night and is set for several months on the sidelines. Full-back Nana Ofori-Twumasi is out with a groin injury, while former Stockport winger Tommy Rowe is also sidelined with a groin strain. Midfielders Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale joined Gillingham on loan last week so are absent, but on-loan defensive duo Lewin Nyatanga and Marcus Williams return after they were ineligible to face the Hatters in midweek. Midfielder Lee Frecklington rounds out the absentees after he suffered ankle ligament damage.

Match Report

Saints hit Posh for four Southampton underlined their promotion credentials by leapfrogging Peterborough with a comprehensive 4-1 in at the end of a miserable week for Peterborough. The visitors, who conceded five at Charlton last week, let in more than three goals for the sixth time this season as Saints celebrated their 125th birthday in fine style. Lee Barnard fired them ahead after 30 minutes, taking Rickie Lambert's pass in his stride before making ground to lash his shot past Joe Lewis' left hand. Southampton effectively sealed the points with two goals in the first five minutes of the second half. First, defender Jose Fonte rose high at the far post to head home Ryan Dickson's cross within 30 seconds of the restart. Within two minutes Saints took command with a superbly crafted goal which saw Alex Chamberlain win the ball on the halfway line and feed Dean Hammond, who picked out Richard Chaplow to volley home his first goal for the club from eight yards. Peterborough pulled a goal back through Aaron McLean, who broke free to lift the ball over Saints keeper Kelvin Davis. But any hopes of a fightback were dashed when Brazilian striker Guly Do Prado restored the three-goal cushion by escaping some poor Peterborough marking to glance home a header from Lee Holmes' free-kick.
