Match Preview

Harding in line for return Dan Harding has a chance of being fit for Southampton when Hartlepool visit St Mary`s. The left-back has been nursing a groin problem but could return to the squad after he was close to being included against Brighton on Saturday. Winger Alex Chamberlain is unlikely to recover from an ankle injury in time, while Lee Barnard will remain on the sidelines. The 16-goal striker was taken to hospital with an ankle injury during the victory over Bristol Rovers and could struggle to play again this season. Adam Lallana has been struggling with a groin tear lately but came on as a half-time substitute during the win over newly-crowned champions Brighton and could be restored to the starting line-up. First-team coach Mick Wadsworth is set to again ring the changes. Wadsworth opted to hand three players - Darren Holden, Andy Rafferty and Josh Rafferty - debuts in Friday`s 1-1 draw with Tranmere. But, despite the trio impressing, they are unlikely to line-up at St Mary`s, much like striker Michael Mackay who was handed his first start of the campaign against Rovers. That could pave the way for Scott Flinders, Steve Haslam, Evan Horwood and Ritchie Humphreys to come back into the starting line-up. Right-back Neil Austin and striker James Brown have lined up for the reserves recently, but this game is likely to come too soon. Pools are currently 14th in League One and, with safety assured, are already building towards next season.

Match Report

Lambert inspires super Saints Rickie Lambert inspired promotion-chasing Southampton to a 2-0 defeat of 10-man Hartlepool which kept the Saints in second place. Saints' top-scorer smashed in a 50th-minute penalty before teeing up centre back Jose Fonte to head in the second eight minutes from time. Pool were no match for Saints, who are favourites to gain automatic promotion behind League One champions Brighton. The visitors, who slip to 15th, played almost all the second half with 10 men after captain Sam Collins was sent off for bringing down Lambert. Nigel Adkins' men thought they had gone ahead when the returning Adam Lallana's cross was headed in by an off-side Guly Do Prado. Pools goalkeeper Scott Flinders kept things even in the first half, keeping out Lambert's angled drive, Lallana's long-ranger and a one-on-one with Do Prado. But he could do nothing as Lambert dusted himself off from Collins' tackle to convert his 19th goal of the season. Lacklustre Hartlepool's only real chance came soon after as sub Michael Mackay ran onto Andy Monkhouse's knock-down, but keeper Kelvin Davies spread himself well. David Connolly was denied by the impressive Flinders before centre back Fonte climbed to meet Lambert's floated free kick.
