Match Preview

Saints missing duo Southampton will be without Danny Butterfield and David Connolly for the visit of Dagenham. Defender Butterfield has been playing through the pain of a thigh problem recently and a small tear was discovered before Saturday's win over Notts County. Summer signing Frazer Richardson, who had been sidelined since pre-season with a shoulder injury, finally made his debut in Butterfield's absence and will continue at right-back. Striker Connolly is still missing with a stomach problem but boss Nigel Adkins has plenty of attacking options in Rickie Lambert, Lee Barnard, Nicholas Bignall and Guly Do Prado. Midfielder Richard Chaplow plays the final game of his initial one-month loan from Preston but Adkins is holding talks over an extension to the deal. Dagenham midfielders Peter Gain and Danny Green will return for the trip. The pair both missed the 1-1 draw with Hartlepool on Saturday thanks to one-match suspensions but will return in place of Darren Currie and Damian Scannell. Cardiff loanee Solomon Taiwo will keep his place in the centre of midfield after his first 90 minutes of the season at the weekend. Defenders Abu Ogogo and Will Antwi are both in full training after their hamstring injuries but will not be considered for the trip. Still`s side are still looking for their first away win of the season and have never played the Saints in any competition before.

Match Report

Saints move through gears Southampton moved into the top six for the first time this season with a 4-0 drubbing of Dagenham and Redbridge at St Mary's Stadium. Saints' star performer was teenage winger Alex Chamberlain, who celebrated his call-up to the England Under-18s squad with two goals and contributed to another. The 17-year-old put Saints in front with the aid of Daggers' debutant goalkeeper Chris Lewington, who completely misjudged the teenager's cross as it flew over his head and into the far corner. But there was more purpose to Chamberlain's second goal when he took aim from a similar position to his first and looped a deliberate effort over the stranded goalkeeper. Southampton put the game out of reach in the 56th minute when a long kick by goalkeeper Kelvin Davis was flicked on by Rickie Lambert to Adam Lallana, who produced a piece of sublime skill to set up Lee Barnard. Chamberlain set up Southampton's fourth, showing blazing pace to outstrip Dagenham defender Damien McCrory and standing up a superb cross for defender Jose Fonte to head home at the far post.
