Match Preview

Forte pushing for start Jonathan Forte is pushing to make his full Southampton debut when Charlton visit St Mary's. The winger, a January signing from Scunthorpe, made his sixth appearance as a substitute against MK Dons on Saturday and scored twice to help Saints come from two goals down to win 3-2. Manager Nigel Adkins could now hand Forte his first start, possibly in place of Brazilian forward Guly do Prado. Teenage winger Alex Chamberlain is still sidelined with an ankle injury and French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin misses out again with a knee problem. Midfielder Oscar Gobern has completed the three-match ban he received for his red card at Bournemouth last month and should be added to the bench. Charlton are hopeful Bradley Wright-Phillips will be fit for the trip. The former Saints striker took his tally for the season to 21 with a goal in Saturday's 3-1 win over Leyton Orient but limped off late on with a slight ankle injury. Fellow forward Paul Benson was also forced off in the closing stages but he was only suffering from cramp. Winger Scott Wagstaff and goalkeeper Rob Elliott also picked up knocks but managed to play the full 90 minutes and should be fine. Joe Anyinsah missed out at the weekend with an ankle problem and he will be checked over. Johnnie Jackson is still out with an Achilles problem and Kelly Youga is sidelined with a knee injury.

Match Report

Saints continue top-two charge Lee Barnard's second goal in as many games helped Southampton edge closer towards automatic promotion with a 2-0 win over Charlton. The striker hit the winner in Saturday`s sensational 3-2 comeback against MK Dons and bagged his side's second against the Addicks after Guly Do Prado had opened the scoring. The visitors to St Mary's should have gone ahead in the eighth minute. Former Saint Bradley Wright-Phillips was inches away from connecting with Therry Racon's cross, which Scott Wagstaff somehow skied from six yards. Two minutes later Brazilian winger Do Prado ran onto Barnard's pass to smash the ball past Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot. Wide man Racon was by far the Addicks' best player but no-one could get onto his crosses. Barnard came closest to netting before half-time, forcing a stretched save from Elliot from 25 yards. Determined Saints then struck the decisive blow with less than an hour gone. Do Prado repaid Barnard for his earlier assist, crossing for the well-placed forward to tap home his 13th of the season. Adkins' men eased to victory and are now two points off second-placed Huddersfield with two games in hand. The only negative for the south-coast side was the loss of new signing Dale Stephens to injury just before the interval.
