Match Preview

No change for Saints Southampton manager Nigel Adkins hopes to name an unchanged starting line-up for the visit of leaders Brighton. Saints were in fine form as they thrashed Peterborough 4-1 on Saturday and suffered no fresh injuries. Ryan Dickson looks set to keep his place at left-back after being preferred to Dan Harding, who was left out of the squad completely after last weekend's defeat at Carlisle. Danny Butterfield returned to the bench on Saturday after a calf injury and will be among the substitutes again with Frazer Richardson now holding down the right-back slot. Young winger Oscar Gobern is fit after a long-term hip injury so Adkins has a full-strength squad at his disposal as Saints look for a seventh straight home win. Brighton captain Gordon Greer has been passed fit for the trip. The defender had to be substituted during Saturday's 2-2 draw against Bristol Rovers through illness but he will make the trip along the south coast. The Seagulls will be without Greer's fellow centre-half Tommy Elphick, who is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season at the weekend. Liam Bridcutt serves the final game of his three-match ban, Matt Sparrow is still missing with a groin injury and Alan Navarro continues his recovery from cruciate ligament damage. Assistant manager Mauricio Taricco could be added to the bench after serving a one-match ban against Rovers following his red card in the FA Cup replay at Woking.

Match Report

Davies denies Seagulls victory Kelvin Davis was the hero for Southampton as his penalty save from Chris Wood held leaders Brighton to a goalless draw at St Mary's. In a disjointed first half, neither side could produce a clear opening as Jose Fonte and Rickie Lambert went closest for Saints. The game finally came alive on the stroke of half-time when Adam Lallana was denied a penalty after being hauled down as he stormed in Brighton's box, while Gary Dicker saw a deflected shot go close at the other end. The second half was similarly hard fought but Brighton spurned a golden chance to snatch all three points on 66 minutes. Ryan Dickson was adjudged to have fouled Glenn Murray in the Saints area, but West Brom loanee Wood - who scored from the spot last week against Bristol Rovers - saw his well-struck penalty saved by Davis. Despite a flurry of late end-to-end action, chances remained scarce as the match ended all-square, keeping the Seagulls on top of League One and Saints lurking in the play-off picture.
