Match Preview

No Fonte for Saints Southampton will be without defender Jose Fonte for the visit of Brentford. The Portuguese centre-half was booked for the fifth time this season against Cheltenham in the FA Cup and serves a one-match ban. But Dan Seabourne is fit after missing the last four matches with a thigh injury and should slot into the back four. Morgan Schneiderlin returns from suspension and fellow midfielder Richard Chaplow is back after resting an Achilles problem, but winger Lee Holmes is out after suffering an ankle injury against Cheltenham. Right-back Frazer Richardson and striker Rickie Lambert also picked up knocks in the 3-0 win over the League Two side but they are expected to be fit. Left-back Ryan Dickson will line up against the club he left over the summer. Brentford are set to be without Myles Weston for the trip. The winger suffered a hamstring injury during the win at Colchester last time out and is not expected to travel to the south coast. Striker Rowan Vine will make his second Bees debut after rejoining the club on loan from QPR, and he could be asked to fill in on the left wing. Sam Wood missed out at the Community Stadium with a leg injury but he is fit again and could also take Weston's spot. Carl Cort is the only long-term absentee as he continues his recovery from a torn Achilles. The experienced former Newcastle and Wolves frontman has been pencilled in for a reserve outing next month.

Match Report

Bees cause Saints shock First-half goals from Brentford's Gary Alexander and Charlie MacDonald stunned promotion favourites Southampton and gave the Bees a deserved 2-0 win at St Mary's. A mistake by Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis gifted Brentford an early lead through Alexander and MacDonald doubled the score midway through the first period. Saints should have been one up after two minutes when highly-rated winger Alex Chamberlain whipped in a cross from the right which was flicked on by Ricky Lambert to Guly who powered a header towards the top corner which was magnificently saved by Brentford goalkeeper Richard Lee. After 13 minutes Alexander hit a speculative effort which slipped out the grasp of Davis and gave the bees a shock lead. Then 15 minutes later MacDonald doubled the lead with a neat finish on the volley after beating the Southampton offside trap. Just after the interval Saints should have got back into the game but Chamberlain's fluffed his lines from eight yards out. The game petered out for a comfortable Brentford win, much to the delight of the travelling support.
