Match Preview

Exodus gives Shrews a problem Shrewsbury are sweating on the fitness of on-loan defender Exodus Geohaghon for the visit of Southend. The Peterborough centre-half picked up a knee injury in last week's 1-1 draw with Stevenage and has not trained all week. But boss Graham Turner is keen for him to play and will give him until the last moment to prove his fitness. Fit-again defender Ian Sharps is hoping to earn a recall after he had to settle for a place on the bench last week following a hamstring injury. Winger Lionel Ainsworth will not be fit as he battles a groin injury but defender Dave Raven (groin) and Tom Bradshaw (ankle) have returned to fitness and are hoping to be a part of Turner's plans. The Shrews are unbeaten at home this season having won five of their seven League Two clashes. Southend boss Paul Sturrock is facing a defensive crisis for the trip. The Shrimpers are desperately short of defensive options with five doubts for the clash. Chris Barker is out after suffering a setback in his recovery from a calf problem and Mark Phillips will rest a hernia in the hope that it clears up before surgery is required. Luke Prosser is awaiting the results of an X-ray to discover the damage to his foot, while Bilel Mohsni is suffering from "three or four injuries" and is doubtful. Graham Coughlan missed the defeats against Charlton and Macclesfield and the draw with Accrington but has resumed training following his groin injury. Sturrock told the club`s official website: "We`ve got a handful of injuries to try and get through. Hopefully some will come through." Ryan Hall could return to the starting line-up after recovering from a dead leg in time to play the last half an hour of the FA Cup first-round replay defeat to Macclesfield, and 15-year-old Lyle Della-Verde could be named on the bench again.

Match Report

Grant toast of Southend Injury-hit Southend earned a point at Shrewsbury as a fine angled volley from Anthony Grant three minutes from time sealed a 1-1 draw. Grant`s strike made amends for his glaring first-half miss when he somehow steered the ball wide from three yards out. Leading Shrewsbury scorer Jake Robinson also missed a golden chance early on when he lost control as he tried to round keeper Glen Morris. But it was his pinpoint cross in the 47th minute that found Matt Harrold and his header back across goal found Mark Wright who scored his fifth goal in seven games. Wright also tested Morris with a sharp left-foot shot which the United keeper did well to save at the foot of his left-hand post. Southend edged the second half and Chris Neal failed to hold Grant's 25-yard shot before scrambling the ball clear. Grant then found the net, Ian Sharps scraped the Southend bar with a header but United held on for a deserved point.
