Match Report

For the second time in four days struggling Shrewsbury Town took a point against one of League Two's high-fliers but their winless run now stretches to nine matches following a goalless draw against visiting Darlington.

After holding Rotherham to a 1-1 draw last Saturday, manager-less Shrewsbury were once again good value for a share of the spoils against one of the Division's promotion hopefuls - but they have now recorded only one win in their last 14 matches.

With John McMahon in temporary charge following the departure of Gary Peters last week, the home side held the upper hand for much of this scrappy affair that neither side in truth deserved to win.

The first 20 minutes were played through a torrential downpour but some of the football on show managed to lift the gloom, with Shrewsbury having much the better of the opening exchanges with skipper Ben Davies prominent as his side sought a breakthrough.

In the seventh minute he had a low shot palmed away by Darlington keeper David Stockdale - who distinguished himself again on 18 minutes when he palmed over a Davies cross that had been deflected toward goal by Darlington central defender Ryan Valentine.

In the 41st minute Stockdale thwarted Davies again, but in the second half and with the strong wind in their favour, the visitors began to threaten and in 68th minute almost grabbed the lead when Jason Kennedy shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

Shrewsbury responded with a spell of pressure of their own and midfielder Kevin McIntyre flashed a shot inches past the post as the game drew to a close.

Although, in the closing stages, Darlington striker Tommy Wright spurned the best chance of the match when he broke clear of the home defence only to shoot wide.
