Match Preview

New-look Shrews raring to go

Shrewsbury will launch their npower League Two promotion push at home to Bradford with a new-look outfit.

Graham Turner has taken over the helm following Paul Simpson's dismissal and the former Hereford chief has brought in nine new faces over the summer.

The boss has a near fully-fit squad for the visit of the Bantams, although Nathan Elder (knee ligaments) is a long-term absentee and is not expected back while February.

Striker Kris Bright is back in training after being struck down by illness but the weekend's match comes too soon for the 23-year-old.

Otherwise, the Shrews are at full strength and Turner is keen to get results on the board, telling the club's official website: "I think the most important thing is winning and that's what supporters expect.

"The atmosphere among the players has been very good, the response to what we've asked them to do has been good and I think that's important. We want players to buy into what you're trying to do."

Bradford manager Peter Taylor could hand on-loan striker Louis Moult his debut.

Taylor moved to bring in the Stoke teenager to bolster his attacking options ahead of the campaign curtain-raiser, which will yield high expectations for the promotion-chasing Bantams.

Fellow summer recruit Lewis Hunt gives his manager options in defence and the 27-year-old could start at centre-half or right-back.

Central defender Simon Ramsden is a near certainty to play after Taylor unveiled him as his new captain for the season.

Ramsden took the armband on several occasions last term and Taylor has seen enough of the 28-year-old to trust him with the role again.

Ramsden told the club's official website: "It was an honour to do it last season and I'm thoroughly looking forward to doing it again."

Match Report

Turner enjoys winning start at Shrews Graham Turner's second spell as Shrewsbury boss got off to a dream start as a Jake Robinson hat-trick saw them come from behind to sink Bradford. 3-1 Peter Taylor's side got into their stride the quicker of the two, taking a 23rd-minute lead when debutant Thomas Adeyemi tapped in after the Shrewsbury centre-backs failed to deal with a flick-on by James Hanson. Shrewsbury had to survive a sustained spell of pressure but rallied to net a 33rd-minute leveller as Robinson notched his first. He tapped in the loose ball when keeper Jon McLaughlin spilled a Mark Wright corner and Ian Sharps' follow up shot was blocked on the line. Robinson then turned the game on its head six minutes into the second half, directing an unstoppable header into the top corner off Lionel Ainsworth's inch-perfect cross. He completed his hat-trick just five minutes later, latching onto Matt Harrold's flick-on and lobbing the shell-shocked McLaughlin. Bradford were given hope when Shrewsbury were reduced to 10 men after 68 minutes, with midfielder Kevin McIntyre shown a straight red card for kicking out at Lewis Moult. But the Shropshire side held on with relative ease to get their season off to a flier.
