Match Preview

Owls to make changes Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine could be tempted to make changes for the home clash with Southampton. The Owls crashed to a third successive league defeat last week at Plymouth and while Irvine has no new injury or suspension worries, the Scot hinted at introducing some new faces. Midfielder Tommy Miller scored a stunning goal after stepping off the bench last week and could be recalled to the starting line-up, while Gary Teale could also return, with Chris Sedgwick and Giles Coke possibly making way. Marcus Tudgay and Neil Mellor are expected to continue up front while winger Jermaine Johnson, yet to appear this season, remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury. The Owls have dropped from top to 11th place in recent weeks and are desperate to avoid a fourth league defeat on the trot. David Connolly is set to miss for Southampton. The veteran striker has been struggling with a stomach injury all week and is unlikely to be involved. Rickie Lambert and Lee Barnard will continue in attack as Saints look for their first goal in seven and a half hours. Defender Aaron Martin has missed the last two games with a back problem but has trained this week and could return. Midfielder Adam Lallana has begun light training but is still a couple of weeks away from a comeback after undergoing knee surgery earlier this month. Full-back Frazer Richardson remains on the sidelines following a dislocated shoulder but he too has been pencilled in for a return in October.

Match Report

Barnard sinks Owls Sheffield Wednesday's season is going from bad to worse as a second-half strike from Lee Barnard handed Nigel Adkins his first win as Southampton manager, with the Saints coming away from Hillsborough with a 1-0 victory. The Owls have now lost four games in a row after initially beginning life in League One by soaring to the top of the table, while the Saints had not won since sacking Alan Pardew despite being billed as two of favourites for promotion. Barnard's effort came about after some woeful Wednesday defending which started when Lewis Buxton put in a short pass to Darren Porter which the Saints exploited fully to give the visitors a lead they never looked like surrendering. Rickie Lambert ran at the Wednesday defence before sliding across to his strike partner to clip the ball into the net beyond goalkeeper Nicky Weaver in the 61st minute. Weaver was the busier of the two keepers throughout to deny Lambert and Barnard in particular, while substitute Adam Lallana twice threatened to add to Southampton's tally in the last 10 minutes. Marcus Tudgay and Clinton Morrison had opportunities in the dying minutes to nick an equaliser for Wednesday but Kelvin Davis and his defence stood firm to spark wild celebrations at the full-time whistle.
