Match Preview

Owls sweating on defensive duo Sheffield Wednesday skipper Darren Purse and fellow defender Jon Otsemobor face late fitness tests ahead of the home game with Rochdale. Purse failed to appear for the second half of the Owls' Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Hartlepool in midweek due to a rib injury, while Otsemobor had been forced off earlier with a calf strain. Both players are rated doubtful. Owls manager Alan Irvine, who has no other new injury or suspension problems, could be boosted by the return of winger Jermaine Johnson, who has missed the last two matches due to a hamstring injury. Wednesday have slipped to 10th place, three points adrift of the play-offs, following back-to-back league defeats and are bidding to win their first game in four League One matches. Rochdale boss Keith Hill could be without goalkeeper Matty Edwards. Edwards suffered a finger injury during the warm-up for the Manchester Senior Cup game against Bolton and is described as doubtful. Hill has an otherwise full squad to choose from as his men bid to bounce back from last week`s FA Cup first-round defeat against FC United of Manchester. Hill said: "I always get a good reaction from the players. I was disappointed with the performance against FC United as well as the result, considering who we were playing against. "The facts are that we were at home and we are the league club and we should not be conceding three goals to FC United."

Match Report

Owls down Dale Second-half goals from Giles Coke and Clinton Morrison gave Sheffield Wednesday a 2-0 win over Rochdale for their third straight victory. Coke struck from the edge of the area after receiving Morrison's lay-off in the 62nd minute. Morrison made it 2-0 seven minutes from time with a glancing header following Tommy Miller's chip into the area. Rochdale made a bright start to the match with Nicky Weaver forced to save from Joe Thompson and Gary Jones. Wednesday improved towards the end of the first half with Neil Mellor heading against the crossbar from Morrison's cross. But Coke fired the Owls ahead before Thompson spurned a great chance to equalise, clipping the ball wide after side-stepping Weaver. Morrison's goal then sealed the victory for Wednesday and left Rochdale with just one win from their last seven games.
