Match Preview

Purse boost for Owls Sheffield Wednesday skipper Darren Purse is expected to be fit to face Oldham at Hillsborough. The central defender felt unwell at half-time after being hit in the face by the ball in Saturday's defeat to Southampton and failed to reappear, but will resume at the heart of defence with Jon Otsemobor likely to make way. Manager Alan Irvine has no new injury or suspension problems, but could be tempted to make further changes after his side slipped to a fourth straight league defeat. Midfielder Tommy Miller and striker Clinton Morrison are both pushing for starts, while Irvine's squad could soon be boosted by the return of winger Jermaine Johnson. The Jamaica international, yet to appear for the Owls this season, is hoping to return to training next week following a long-term knee injury. Oldham boss Paul Dickov will be again without striker Warren Feeney. The Northern Ireland International has missed the last two games with an niggling ankle problem and remains sidelined. In Feeney's absence Dickov seems likely to hand a second successive start to Lewis Alessandra after he scored in the 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the weekend. Fellow striker Ryan Brooke returns to the squad after recovering from ankle ligament damage sustained in pre-season while Andy Holdsworth has been recalled. However, Greg Fleming (knee), Keith Millar (groin strain) aswell as first-year professionals Djeny Bembo-Leta (fractured fibula and damaged ankle ligaments) and Phil McGrath (cruciate) are still unavailable.

Match Report

Stalemate at Hillsborough Sheffield Wednesday halted a four-match losing streak as they played out an uninspiring goalless draw with Oldham at Hillsborough. Owls boss Alan Irvine rang the changes after defeats to Brentford, Carlisle, Plymouth and Southampton but despite an improved showing, his side lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. Chances were at a premium for both teams throughout, and while Wednesday enjoyed the better of the possession in the first-half, it was the Latics who were the closest to scoring. First when Dean Furman volleyed just wide of the angle when well-placed and then when Dale Stephens failed to capitalise with a free-kick just outside the area. Clinton Morrison did have half a shout for a penalty in the first-half but it was not until the second period that Wednesday had any meaningful shot of note. Giles Coke was just off target with a rare strike on the edge of the box, while Gary Teale fired over with an ambition shot from range. At the other end of the pitch, Chris Taylor had a late chance to win it for Oldham but shot inches wide of Nicky Weaver's goal.
