Match Preview

Wednesday duo could return Giles Coke and Lewis Buxton are hoping to be in contention for Sheffield Wednesday's home FA Cup clash with Northampton. Midfielder Coke missed the midweek win over Walsall due to a knee problem while defender Buxton has been nursing a hamstring strain, but both could feature in the second-round tie. Manager Alan Irvine has no new injury or suspension worries but will still be without defender Jon Otsemobor as he continues to recover from a calf injury sustained against Hartlepool earlier this month. Striker Marcus Tudgay, who has featured off the substitutes' bench in recent weeks, has completed a loan move to Nottingham Forest until January. Wednesday comfortably overcame Blue Square Bet Premier side Southport 5-2 at Haig Avenue in the first round. Northampton will have Liam Davis back in the squad for the trip. Davis missed the 2-2 draw at Rotherham in midweek through a one-match suspension but is available to face the Owls and will battle with Marcus Hall for the left-back spot. Striker Leon McKenzie is a doubt with his troublesome knee after playing the full 90 minutes at the Don Valley Stadium but on-loan Leicester striker Craig King is allowed to play. Manager Ian Sampson has another attacking option available after he signed Leyton Orient striker Ryan Jarvis on loan until January on Thursday evening. Newcastle defender Ben Tozer has also been cleared to feature but right-back John Johnson is a doubt after picking up a thigh injury at Rotherham. Courtney Herbert is back from his foot problem but Tadhg Purcell will miss the entire season with knee ligament damage.

Match Report

Miller at the double to send Owls through Tommy Miller scored two penalties to help Sheffield Wednesday reach the third round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over Northampton. Mark Beevers opened the scoring for the home side while Billy McKay and Kevin Thornton found the net for Northampton. Beevers gave Wednesday a sixth-minute lead with a close-range header after meeting Tommy Spurr's corner. Wednesday's Clinton Morrison looked certain to score when he was put through by Chris Sedgwick but the striker's shot came back off a post. The visitors threatened to equalise when McKay's shot from inside the area was turned wide by Nicky Weaver and Nathaniel Wedderburn's long-range drive flashed narrowly wide. Miller increased Wednesday's lead eight minutes before the break from the penalty spot after Neil Mellor was tripped in the area by Liam Davis. McKay then scored in the 56th minute after being left unmarked to give Northampton hope. It looked to be all over when Miller converted a stoppage time penalty conceded by Paul Rodgers but Thornton scored with a quickly-taken free-kick to give Northamton a glimmer of hope at the death.
