Match Preview

Wednesday wait on duo Sheffield Wednesday pair Mark Beevers and Neil Mellor could both miss the home clash with Leyton Orient. Both players, rated 50/50, were forced out of the midweek Johnstone's Paint Trophy clash with Chesterfield, Beevers after taking a knock on his ankle and Mellor due to a virus. Manager Alan Irvine has plenty of options up front and at the back, though. Daniel Jones, Jon Otsemobor and Tommy Spurr can all fill in at centre-half, but Lewis Buxton is expected to switch into the middle with Otsemobor covering at right-back. Clinton Morrison, Marcus Tudgay and Paul Heffernan are all vying for a starting place in attack. Winger Jermaine Johnson was expected to have been included on the bench against Chesterfield, but Irvine refuses to rush the Jamaica international, who has yet to appear this season due to a knee injury. Leyton Orient goalkeeper Jamie Jones is missing from the squad which heads north. Jones has been ruled out for up to three weeks with the groin injury he suffered against Oldham last weekend. Former Tottenham youngster Lee Butcher took over in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy penalty shoot-out defeat by Brentford in midweek and will make his full league debut. Spurs loanee Paul-Jose M'Poku is also unavailable after being called up for international duty with Belgium's under-19 side. Boss Russell Slade gave some of his fringe players a run-out on Tuesday night so the likes of Adam Chambers, Charlie Daniels, Dean Cox and Scott McGleish will return to the starting line-up. French striker Jonathan Tehoue appeared as a substitute against the Bees after a month out with an ankle injury and should be involved again.

Match Report

Owls fortunate to fly off with points Lewis Buxton's goal early in the second half gave Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 victory they scarcely deserved against Leyton Orient to extend their unbeaten run to four games. The goal came when Gary Teale's 52nd-minute corner was met by Buxton at the far post with a firm downward header. Leyton Orient will feel they should have secured at least a point after creating a number of good openings. But they were left to rue a combination of wasteful finishing and an impressive performance from Wednesday keeper Nicky Weaver. When Weaver was beaten, Darren Purse and James O'Connor came to his rescue, clearing the ball off the line from Dean Cox and Scott McGleish respectively. The busy Cox also fired off target from a good position inside the area and forced a good save from Weaver. Alex Revell was the first to test the Owls stopper with an early header while Terrell Forbes headed wide later in the half. Aside from the goal, Wednesday's only other effort was an angled shot from Teale which was parried by Lee Butcher.
