Match Preview

Marshall back for Owls Ben Marshall is expected to return to Sheffield Wednesday's starting line-up against Charlton in the final game of his current loan period. Stoke winger Marshall was refused permission to play in last week's FA Cup win over West Ham and Jermaine Johnson stepped in. Talks are ongoing between Wednesday and Stoke about extending Marshall's stay until the end of the season. Striker Gary Madine (broken toe) and defender Lewis Buxton (hamstring) are closing in on a return to first-team action and could play some part but Julian Bennett is unlikely to feature after sustaining a nasty facial cut against West Ham. Newcastle defender James Tavernier, who played on the right wing last weekend, has returned to parent club Newcastle while on-loan striker Sanchez Watt is available for his last game before he is due back at Arsenal. The Owls, with just one defeat in their last 12 games, have no new injury or suspension problems. Ben Hamer and Leon Clarke return to the Charlton squad. Goalkeeper Hamer was suspended for the FA Cup defeat at Fulham after a red card at Leyton Orient on New Year's Eve and will come straight back in for John Sullivan. Striker Clarke, the recent signing from Swindon, made his Addicks debut as a substitute against Brentford last week but was cup-tied at Craven Cottage. Boss Chris Powell has no new injury concerns but is still without midfielder Dale Stephens due to an ankle problem. Veteran striker Jason Euell has moved to AFC Wimbledon on a month's loan and young winger Ben Davisson has left The Valley at the end of his short-term deal.

Match Report

Johnnie clips Owls' wings Johnnie Jackson's first-half free-kick ended Sheffield Wednesday's unbeaten home record in League One as table-topping Charlton won 1-0 at Hillsborough. In a scrappy opening period Bradley Wright-Phillips tested Owls goalkeeper Nicky Weaver from a tight angle before Chris Lines' shot at the other end was blocked on the line. Addicks skipper Jackson then put the visitors ahead in the 28th minute, curling a trademark set-piece into the top right-hand corner from the edge of the area following a foul by Reda Johnson on Bradley Pritchard. The home side responded to the setback and Lines stung the palms of visiting keeper Ben Hamer with a shot from long distance while left-back Johnson could have levelled when he was allowed a free header inside the box. Gary Madine did have the ball in the Charlton net in first-half stoppage time but his neat turn and finish was flagged offside. Wright-Phillips should have extended the away side's lead four minutes after the restart but, after outpacing Wednesday skipper Rob Jones, he was brilliantly denied by Weaver. Clinton Morrison's header was cleared off the line at the death but the league leaders held on.
