Match Preview

Same again for Owls Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine is not expected to make many changes for the top-of-the-table clash with Carlisle. Irvine has no new injury or suspension problems and although the Owls' unbeaten start came to a halt at Brentford last week, he is likely to pick an unchanged starting line-up. Midfielder James O'Connor is pressing for a recall to the starting line-up. He was a second-half substitute for Chris Sedgwick at Brentford and gives Irvine an alternative option. Summer signing Paul Heffernan, also a second-half substitute last week, is waiting for his first league start but Marcus Tudgay and Neil Mellor appear to be Irvine's first-choice strikers. The only first-team squad member sidelined through injury remains winger Jermaine Johnson, who is working his way back from a knee injury. Carlisle could be without Marc Bridge-Wilkinson and Kevan Hurst. Bridge-Wilkinson hurt his ankle during training last week and missed the goalless home draw with Swindon while fellow midfielder Hurst is struggling with a back problem and could also miss out. Defender Danny Livesey remains sidelined and has targeted a return some time during October following his long-term groin injury. Manager Greg Abbott has no other new injury or suspension problems as his side look to maintain their unbeaten start in npower League One. Recent signing Lubo Michalik made his debut in central defence last week and is expected to start again while Ben Marshall, back on loan from Stoke, is pushing for a place in the starting line-up.

Match Report

Cumbrians fly high at Owls Carlisle moved up to second in League One after Craig Curran's first-half goal gave them a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday and their first ever win at Hillsborough. Curran struck in the 34th minute with a low shot from the edge of the area which went just inside Nicky Weaver's left-hand post. Before the goal, Gary Madine twice went close to putting the visitors in front, forcing Weaver to block with his legs early on and then having a header cleared off the line. Apart from an early spell, during which Chris Sedgwick had a shot deflected wide and a Clinton Morrison effort was blocked, Carlisle dominated the first half. As they pressed for a second goal, Weaver again used his legs to keep out Francois Zoko's effort just before the break. Curran almost added another early in the second-half with a glancing header which was well saved by Weaver, who got down low to his left. James Chester headed just wide as Greg Abbott's men continued to impress. Darren Potter's free-kick, which was easily saved by Adam Collin, was Wednesday's only effort on target in the second half.
