Match Preview

Mellor eyeing starting berth Sheffield Wednesday striker Neil Mellor is pushing for his first league start of the season against Brighton. Owls manager Alan Irvine has no new injury or suspension problems but could be tempted to hand Mellor his chance. Mellor has started as a substitute in Wednesday's two league games so far, with Clinton Morrison partnering Marcus Tudgay up front, but the on-loan Preston forward stepped off the bench to fire a late equaliser at Colchester last weekend. Irvine will again be without Jermaine Johnson as the winger continues his rehabilitation after damaging knee ligaments, while midfielder Tommy Miller has not yet fully recovered from a hamstring strain. Summer signings Daniel Jones and Paul Heffernan and midfielder Darren Potter give Irvine further options as the Owls look to secure a second straight home league win. Brighton will be without Gordon Greer and Matt Sparrow. Skipper Greer begins a three-match suspension after his sending-off on his debut against Rochdale last weekend, and Sparrow is halfway through his three-game ban for a red card at Northampton. With the Seagulls short of numbers 37-year-old assistant-manager Mauricio Taricco played at left-back for the reserves in midweek, his first game since he turned out for West Ham in 2004, and he could be involved as cover. Midfielder Alan Navarro is a long-term absentee with cruciate damage and defender Lewis Dunk is still sidelined with a foot injury. Goalkeeper Peter Brezovan has had the cast removed from his wrist and is a week away from returning to training.

Match Report

Owls fly high Giles Coke's first-half goal was enough to give Sheffield a 1-0 victory over Brighton and maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Coke struck in the 38th minute, producing an emphatic finish after bursting into the area following a lay-off from Marcus Tudgay. Brighton had their chances to score with Elliot Bennett, Jamie Smith and Glenn Murray all going close. Before the goal, Bennett tested Nicky Weaver in the Wednesday goal with a couple of efforts and Owls skipper Darren Purse saw his glancing header turned over by Casper Ankergren. Smith shot narrowly wide towards the end of the first-half and then struck the top of the bar with a volley soon after the re-start. Coke threatened to find the net again when his shot on the turn was well saved by Ankergren. As the visitors pressed for an equaliser, Murray saw his angled effort roll wide of the far post after being set-up by Smith. Marcus Tudgay and Neil Mellor both went close for Wednesday in the latter stages.
